The 2006 Dragonfly Festival, sponsored by the Friends
of Bitter Lake, will be held at the Bitter Lake
National Wildlife Refuge east of Roswell, New Mexico
on Saturday and Sunday, September 9th & 10th. The
schedule of Dragonfly Slide Presentations at the new
Visitors Center and the Dragonfly, Discovery, Early
Bird, and Sink Hole Tours can be located on the Bitter
      Lake Homepage at:

      http://www.fws.gov/southwest/refuges/newmex/bitterlake/

The dragonfly tours will be led by Refuge Biologist,
Gordon Warrick; James L. Lasswell of Texas A&M
University; Karen Gaines of the University of New
Mexico; and myself. The Ink Pot Sink Hole Tour in the
Salt Creek Wilderness will be led by Refuge Ranger,
Steve Alvarez. That isolated sink on the refuge's
north tract also has a population of Seaside
Dragonlets. The Discovery Tour of endangered species
in the closed areas of the refuge will be led by
Refuge Manager, Jeff Howland. One should see the many
endangered snails and amphipods and the amazing Pecos
Puzzle Sunflower (Helianthus paradoxis), which grows
in standing saltwater, on Jeff's tour. The Early Bird
Tour will be led by Cecil Kimberlin on Saturday
Morning. Sam's Club will provide lunch on Saturday.
