Went to the comic shop after cashing my “screw you, I’m rated 60% disabled” tax-free guv-ment check and picked up the following books

SMOKE AND GUNS - Kirsten Baldock, Fabio Moon, Ait *Planet Lar, $12.95: When Scarlett, an overly ambitious cigarette girl — quick to break the rules and even quicker to pull the trigger — starts selling cigarettes outside of her district, tensions rise and the seeds of an all-out cigarette girl gang war are sown. When you're out on the street in the middle of the night wearing your little French Maid outfit, with the short skirt and the off-the-shoulder top, Jack Daniels isn't just your friend, it's your coat. And the 9mm in your tray isn't just your protection — it's the compass that points you the way home.

DR. BLINK SUPERHERO SHRINK  - John Kovalic, Christopher Jones, $3.49: Jimmy Hogan is Wonder Boy! Or, at least, he was Wonder Boy. At least he was a Wonder Boy, twenty-some years ago.  Meet Jimmy Hogan, ex-Child Superhero Sidekick Star. Autographed photos: five dollars each. Attitude: free.

SOLO – Jordi Bernet, $4.99: Spanish comic book artist extraordinaire Jordi Bernet (BATMAN: BLACK AND WHITE VOL. 2) dives into issue #6 of SOLO! Bernet teams up with some of today's best writers, illustrating tales of horror and revenge by Brian Azzarello, John Arcudi, Joe Kelly, Andrew Helfer and Chuck Dixon.   Featuring stories from the Old West, 1950s Las Vegas , a South American prison, a forgotten Texas town, and a Batman/Poison/Ivy tale fresh from the streets of Gotham City !

THE WINGS OF ANANSI - Mike Oeming, Gret Titus, $6.99:  This is the story of a loser, a stripper, a drug lord and a spider. It's urban crime noir, it's a fairy tale, it's mythology. It's also the story of a mother who went through a lot in life, a woman who gained and lost, hated and loved, but never once gave up on life. Deep inside, she was golden, and her inner strength ultimately set her free. No matter what bonds hold a person back, be it a bad marriage, prison, a small town or a gang-infested city, there's a way.  The story of Anansi is an African folk tale, told by people who songs and stories carried the spirits of men and women throughout the centuries, though good times and bad.

You will, please, let us know how you like them, right? Dr. Blink is great--though, curiously enough, not as great as thought the first issue was, that being one to three-page on-the-couch sessions with super-types:  very funny.  Wings of Anansi I've thought about, but haven't much liked Oeming's solo outings (how's that for a phrase?), so haven't picked it up.

        Happy reading!
        Matt
