  • When I was younger, there were lots of "open-pit" coal mines in OH and PA, underground mines in WVA. "Black lung disease" was not uncommon then. I rarely hear about it any more, but maybe the media are just choosing to ignore it, I don't know. -------------- Original message from Marianne Petruska : -------------- Thanks. I'm going to forward your message to my nieces & nephews who...

  • "I am having Slovak withdrawl" Me too. That's why today I'm going to make klobasa v ceresna v med horcica. That sounds good on a cold day like today. When I woke up this morning, it was -13F. At the moment, it's crawled up to +5F. Good day for some "comfort food" I'd say! Laskavy prosim, Skeeter -------------- Original message from Ben Sorensen : -------------- I have some too, but...

  • I can't help directly, Chuck. I'm a old man. What I hope to keep going are the recipes from our grandmothers. I got some potato/bacon & sauerkraut pierogi today http://polisheats.com/ Maybe it's Polish, but it's Eastern-European food, what I was raised on. That's what matters most to me. • Poetry is indeed very difficult to translate from one language to another. I happen to be a big fan of the late Edgar Alan Poe, and I can't imagine trying to translate his writings. My dad (a Czech) got me turned onto Poe back in the 1950's. I recently got the complete collected works of everything Poe, and that's my next big read. It's only 852 pages long. LOL!! • Jesalyn, et.al-- My comment wasn't to be a denigration of the French at all, just the snooty "French" restaurants here in the US. I can also go to a good Italian restaurant with my wine (usually Chablis) and chicken cacciatore. Maybe I just got burned, but in the unlikely event I make it to France, my experience has been here in the US, and it hasen't been good. Laskavy prosim...

  • What little of steelmaking I know, the furnaces need to be shut down in an orderly fashion, or they'll never work again. If they shut them down in Slovakia, that's probably why. At least I hope so. My heart and prayers go out to all those who are going to be shivvering because of the Russians. Putin can kiss my heiny.
