  • http://spis.korzar.sme.sk/c/7618502/starolubovniansky-okres-zazil-vypalene-dediny-mrtvych-i-rabovanie.html Is a link to Korzar Spis newspaper from 5. Feb 2015 with a series of short stories on the end-of-war experience in the Lubovna area of Slovakia. It is in Slovak, so for those of us using Google Translate, caution, as usual. The simpler but understandable error in translation...

  • Helen, I am glad to hear you mention the influx of Italian artisans into the Slovak lands, it is an often overlooked pool of immigration. From my readings it was quite common for the rich to import the latest in architecture from Italy, including the architects and all of the hand workers / technicians who worked the stone, wood and other materials needed to build their manor...

  • The only time I could not escape carp was with a dear Sudenten Duetsch couple I knew. How often they changed the water I cannot say, but it likely was often enough to keep oxygen in the water to keep the fish healthy. Three days would not be long enough to 'cleanse' or purge natural flavor from a fish, and most all in Europe would come from fish farms or artificial ponds set up...

  • It is good to see there is still life and a following in Slovak World! Here is a link to the story of Probstener's Road, the historic road between Jakubany and Levoca. The locals tell the story that "the road is abandoned and it is called Probstner's historical road. " This article gives more of the detail, in English. http://geotur.tuke.sk/pdf/2010/n01/05_Complova_v1_n1.pdf I find...

  • Long John, You have been crying in your beer for 3 or 4 years about censorship. All I asked at the time was that you not respond to my postings on Slovak topics with your poison political commentary. It stifled conversation with others on topic. So go back to your tear diluted beer and whatever degree of obscurity you choose. ... and Happy New Year to you, and to all on this forum...

  • Some news about our neighbors to the north: "Kay, who grew up speaking an Eastern European dialect called Lemko,..." Andrew Kopischiansky changed his name to Andrew Kay. Andrew Kay of the famous Kaypro luggable Notebook dies at 95 For a few years in the 1980s, Andrew Kay's computers were top-quality, low-cost and, for the day, feather-light. The Kaypro II, one of the top-selling...

  • Since it is 100 years ago this year that World War 1 started, and that Slovakia (then as part of Hungary) suffered so much during the war, I am curious what memories and small tales may have been passed down in families of those times. There were all the young men drafted to fight as soldiers, there were invasions as the Russians penetrated into Hungary, over the Carpathians and...

  • It seems there is a new organization (2012) out there dedicated to "ReWilding Europe" and the "natural" corner of NE Slovakia and SE Poland seem to figure in a good part of their plans. I guess they want to take advantage of the areas of Central Europe that have reverted to nature since the wars of the last centuries along with the subsequent depopulation of the area and the ethnic...
