In May 2004 ten new member countries will join the European Union. In this
historic enlargement, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia,
Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia will join the current
members Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece,
Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and
the United Kingdom, creating a Union of 455 million citizens. The entry of
these ten countries into the European Union on 1 May 2004 is a historic
achievement, ending centuries of division. Europe reunited means a stronger,
democratic and more stable continent, with a single market providing
economic benefits for all its citizens.

We hope that you will join us to celebrate the EU enlargement through
European culture at one of the many events planned for the Washington area
during the month of May. The list of these events is available at our web
      page: http://www.slovakembassy-us.org/eunews.html
