According to the latest Gallup poll, the average American expects to spend $770 on Christmas presents this year. A separate European survey by Deloitte has shown the average Slovak expects to spend $405 on presents, three dollars above the European average.
The presents the Slovaks frequently wish for are money, books, smartphones, tablets, video games, and -- with a drop by comparison to previous years -- cosmetics and clothing. In the past, the Slovaks who wanted books and video games saw their Christmas wishes fulfilled most often.

The two unexpected items whose sales have jumped up by comparison to Slovakia's previous Christmas-present shopping periods are sewing machines and... breathalyzers.
