Economic freedom ...but no Becherovka today
- Slovakia banned the import of drinks with more than 20 percent alcohol from the Czech R. this afternoon (9/18), which includes the herb liqueur Becherovka, one of the popular drinks among tourists and Slovaks alike. Bratislava took the step after four people showed signs of poisoning in Presov after they drank alcohol bought online from the Czech R. 22 Czechs already died and dozens more were poisoned, the Czech police are uncovering a criminal ring that used methanol and fake bottle labels in their liquor supplies to Czech taverns and stores.
Here's Slovakia and Central Europe in a more sober take on world economic freedom released Tuesday by the Economic Freedom Network (their U.S. member is the liberal-conservative Cato Institute). A higher number means more economic freedom according to the EFN:
7.16 Czech R.
The freest country (territory, actually) in the world is Hong Kong with a rating of 8.9 according to the EFN, the U.S. got 7.69 points, Venezuela is at the bottom with 4.07.
