The European Union has released the latest comparison of prices. Switzerland has the highest prices for visitors to Central Europe, Hungary and Poland are the cheapest countries for eating out, drinking, and accommodation. Here is how Central Europe stacks up by comparison to Slovakia's prices set at 100 in each group:

      Restaurants and hotels:

      199 Switzerland
      151 Austria
      146 Germany
      101 Czech R.
      100 Slovakia
      _92 Hungary
      _89 Poland

      Alcohol and tobacco:

      138 Switzerland
      121 Germany
      114 Austria
      100 Slovakia and Czech R.
      _91 Poland
      _84 Hungary

The comparison is relevant to anyone, tourist or resident -- it does not compare the costs to the local wages. The EU comparison of the food prices in supermarkets shows it's no surprise that many Slovaks like to drive and load up with groceries in Poland and the Czech Republic (there is no limit on how much the inhabitants of the European Union can import from another EU country for their own consumption):

      Food and pop in supermarkets:

      184 Switzerland
      142 Austria
      136 Germany
      100 Slovakia and Hungary
      _96 Czech R.
      _86 Poland
