      Larry Roberts of Uniontown area, former Pennsylvania state delegate, was Larry Rabbits when we were kids. I believe that name was Americanized from Zyotz (my phonetic spelling from grade school remembrance).

      Just an observation on the "hare" connection ;

      Besides the word Zajic meaning "hare" in Slovak

      Leporidae is the species or maybe genus of the hare.

      So if the root is lepor maybe it matches the root of Leporis.

      I haven't followed this thread back to it's beginning so forgive me if this has been touched on already.

      Larry

      So what is the symbolism of the hare? In us rabbits and hares are a bit different as they tend to stand out because of their longer necks...dlb

      Yes, it is. But I am humbled by my family and not big headed about it.
      Fact is I am a direct decendent of the Zajic/Busic family. Nicolous and Zbynko Leporis z Hazenburk defected during hussite war to Hungarian kingdom in 1448 with a letter of safe conduct from the Emperor. They were the the two that converted to the Evangelical/Lutheran church and fled Bohemia. They landed in the Nitra valley. It is a matter of record their progeny owned a vineyard there (Mattias 1620). Because of household overflow they moved to trades and crafts. I don't know what if any role the remaining family had in the battle at white mountain. You might as well search for the records of the valley of the clerks in Crecy. Futile I suspect. However, According to Siebmacher's
      Wappenbuch "Der Adel von Ungarn" it was granted to
      both families (Leporis and Vittoris) by king Leopold 1 on 27 August 1710 for loyal services during the Tkly uprising and was published in Trencsn county in 1711. However, the Vittoris and Leporis formed an alliance and lived mostly on ecclesiastic preferment in Kunova Teplica. My ancestor Rachel married a Vittoris and moved to Presov with Rachel's brother and his family in tow. At that time a letter patent was issued jointly again to the family by Maria Theresa in 1741 for the families former glory. Even Joseph Drenko wrote of their marriage so it must have been a really big deal at the time. They were lawyers and doctors. Suddenly my ancestor Gaspar Leporis was a missionary minded man and he and his brother moved from the Revuca district of Gomor to Pivnice in Vojvodina, now in Serbia to teach in the Lutheran church there in the late 1790's. He was also a poet that talked about economics ( I don't get that part either). Eventually, in 1913 my great grandfather L'udovit and his brother Samual moved to America to work in the steel mills in Youngstown Ohio. My great uncle Sam's and his wife Paulina's naturalization is a matter of record. My ggrandpa however made no attempt at this. He had five girls (my Aunts) when he came. My Grandfather Big Louie (Ludko) was born here in 1922. Unfortunately my ggrandfather died of cancer the day before my dad was born in 1945. And now here I am! :) Certainly there is much more to this story I have yet to discover or share. And yes, I need a hair cut lol. You asked, so I hope you remember how I opened this message.

      Respectfully,
      LLeporis
