FW: Slovak Foreign Minister to Visit the US on May 7-8, 2003
- We are pleased to inform you that Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak
Republic Mr. Eduard Kukan will visit Washington, DC on May 7-8, 2003. He
will be accompanied by Mr. Jan Figel, Chairman of the Foreign Relations
Committee of the Slovak Parliament; Mr. Rastislav Kacer, Deputy Minister of
Defense; and Mr. Ivan Korcok, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.
On May 8, Mr. Kukan, together with Foreign Ministers of countries invited to
join NATO - Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, and
Slovenia, will meet with President George W. Bush and leaders of the US
Senate at the White House and then attend a Rose Garden event. Following is
the statement by the White House Deputy Press Secretary about this event:
³On May 8, President Bush will welcome the Foreign Ministers of the seven
nations invited to join NATO at the November 2002 NATO Summit in Prague. He
will be joined by leaders of the United States Senate, which is considering
a resolution to provide its advice and consent to the ratification of the
Protocols which will formally admit these nations as members of NATO.
The new democracies of Central and Eastern Europe treasure the freedom they
have regained following the end of the Cold War. They have already acted as
Allies in providing strong support to the United States in the war on
terrorism, and bringing peace and democracy to Afghanistan and Iraq. Their
membership in NATO will strengthen the Alliance, which remains the central
pillar of transatlantic relations. The President has called upon the United
States Senate to join him in advancing the cause of freedom by providing its
prompt advice and consent to the ratification of these Protocols of
The seven Foreign Ministers will also meet with their US counterpart -
Secretary of State Colin Powell and representatives of the US Congress.
On May 8, 2003 between 10:30 am -12:00 pm the seven Foreign Ministers,
including Minister Kukan, will hold a joint press-conference at the Woodrow
Wilson Center. Details will be announced later.
At 7:00 pm on Wednesday May 7, 2003, Slovak Embassy will hold a reception
honoring the Foreign Minister and his delegation, during which the art
project ³A Bride; Tribute to Ludovit Fulla² by Alex Mlynarcik will be opened
by Minister Kukan. This event will be open to the public, but it is
