I've scaled way back -- but in prior generations it was not only Czec-o-Slovak but European and maybe Ethnic for sure -- and probably just a universally kind gesture. I'm with Michelle, I offer whatever beverage I have -- which, since I live alone, is limited to coffee, tea, or beer -- and my brand is the flavor of the house. When visiting gram's village 2 summers ago, I swear I had to tell them to STOP ALREADY, I could literally eat not another bite -- but they certainly take pride in bringing out the food constantly. Same for when I was in Ireland nearly a decade ago now, the men would offer a beer or drink and a short while later all the women would emerge from the kitchen with trays full of things they had assembled. Don't even get me started on the wedding in Germany I attended, wow, that was endless.

When I was a little kid (that would be in the '50s), we would go to my Grandma Rataj's house, and she always had a hoska on the pantry shelf for unexpected guests. I think she must have made them every day. She wasn't a relative, but the mother of my dad's best friend, killed during WWII.

Well, I try to carry on the same tradition. No visitor leaves my home without something to eat. Might be a full meal, might be soup, might be some tidbit, but no one leaves without something. Is it just me, or is that a Czechoslovak (or other culture) tradition? Just curious.
