Subject: [Slovak-World] Shpor(ova) plant
I'm wondering about another word from the diary. It occurs in the
phrase _s~po'rova' fabrika_. According to the description it was a
steelworks or ironworks, or metal smelting was at least part of its
operation. Some of its employees made molds (no shape specified),
others poured hot metal in them. It was in Milwaukee, WI.
The second word, _fabrika_ means a "plant, factory."
The _-ova'_ in the first word is just a derivational ending, the root
is _s~po'r-_ [shpor-].
I do not know whether he used an older Slovak/German word that
described what kind of plant it was, or tried to represent English --
the actual name of the plant or a word descriptive of it. Does
something like a shpor (plant), a shpar (plant), shporworks, spor ...,
spar ..., and other variations, remind anyone of what it could have been?
