How much an average Slovak household has budgeted for this year's
Christmas by comparison to how much they spent last year (i.e., it is
a comparison between a plan for the future and past reality - people
tend to "plan" to spend less). Because of the differences in prices,
these dollar amounts are likely to buy more in Slovakia than they
      would in the US:

      2005 _ (2004)

      Food $107 _ ($111)
      Soda $17 _ ($15)
      Liquor $18 _ ($17)
      Presents $125 _ ($137)

According to the economists, the $107 should buy about the same amount
of food as last year because of a continuing drop in the food prices
since Slovakia joined the European Union.

The college educated are planning to spend more than the Slovak
average, and so are the inhabitants of north-central and north-western
Slovakia. The sum total of the Christmas budget is the equivalent of
      about a two-weeks' average salary/wages.
