      > So for how long has Brno been spelled Brno?

The castle as brnen (masculine form [+ "castle"]) in 1048, the
settlement as brno (neuter form [+ "field, area"]) in 1091, RU.

The words were adjectives, probably meaning "clay, marshy, muddy
[area]." Brna was the feminine form, quite common in place-names.
Men's names also sometimes ended in -a, so it used to be easy to
adopt such a place-name as a personal name.
