Walk out the front door of the Slovan.

        Turn left (roughly south).

Walk two blocks, crossing the wide street "S^tu'rova".

The Centrum has a quaint Slovak restaurant, all in
rustic wood and the waiters wear traditional peasant
        clothing.

        http://www.pragueholiday.cz/kosice.html

If you turn right, you'll proceed into the old town
area, with the water fountain, opera house, St.
Elizabeth Cathedral, St. Michael Chapel, Franciscian
Church, and one of favorite watering holes the Zlaty
        Ban^a (gold mine).

The link above is to a site describing several hotels
in the area. We've had dinner at the Hotel Bankov and
it probably the best one there, but is quite a
distance from the center of Kosice.

what really impresses me is that the staff will come
in at some ungodly hour to make a full breakfast for
my groups - even the times when we have to be at the

The rooms have been renovated and great big windows

If anyone is willing to avoid the 5-star and more modern facilities
-- and want a less expensive place to stay -- try school dorms. On my
May term trips with college students, we stay in simple, yet
comfortable, school dorm rooms about a 5-minute walk from the centrum
in Kosice. The dorm is on a hill and overlooks the city. Great view.
The cost now is less than $10 per person per night! The first year
we took this trip (1999), the cost was about $2.25 per room (two
people). Two years ago, it was up to $6.50 per room.
HOWEVER, there is no restaurant in the dorm. But for younger people
who don't have extra finances, it was perfect. We'll be back in the
same dorm within a month. I'm taking eight students this spring.

In 2003, we had over 90 relatives meet in the main dining area with a
                        catered buffet

It is near the town center, good food, and bar

Yes, the Turiec management also has been nice to me and my college
student group. (I take a group to Slovakia every other spring.) I
use Martin as my base camp -- and we take side trips from there. I
had told Helen that we usually stay at the Cierna Pani, a motel-type
lodging (with restaurant) about 2-1/2 blocks from the Martin centrum.
But a few years ago, because of an itinerary change, the Cierna Pani
could not take us for part of the time -- so we stayed a few days at
                          the Turiec.

Although the Turiec charged about a third more per room, they agreed
to give us the rooms at the same price as we had paid at Cierna Pani.
Of course, it helped that my Slovak friend did the talking. The CP
has about 12 rooms on the second floor. The building resembles a
home. One of the corner rooms has a small balcony. We usually get
that room because it's larger and can hold four single beds.

By the way, I will be leaving for Slovakia April 27 with eight media
students. We will spend 13 days at the Cierna Pani. For the story
seekers, this place has an interesting history. It was a prostitute
                          home back in the 20s.
                          Lil

It's across the street from the post office. Plus the art and
literature museum in the old Matica Slovenska building on the main
street. Not to forget the current Matica building atop the hill, just
beyond the ethno museum. That's where the state library is. Some
exciting exhibits there. And the Benko art museum near Cierna Pani
                              (He was the national artist).
So, Martin has a lot of things to see --- these are just some of them
                              within blocks of each other.

This group could probably create a large list of towns to visit and
things to see or do that will interest a travelor to Slovakia.

I don't know how to create the section on the web site but we should be
able to create a list of towns in Slovakia and have members propose
things to see and do in each one. Someone planning a trip to Slovakia
can download data for all of the towns of interest.
