then, but then it was nice, but still showed a lot of the Commie design
influence. Tiny elevators, tec. We enjoyed our stay. They had a nice
little Casino. Took a few crowns from me.

Where is the Centrum in relation to the Slovan? We didn't notice it while
we were there, but have heard several people mention it on SW since.

There are two really nice hotels in Kosice:

      Hotel Slovan
      Hlavna ul.1
      040 01 Kosice
      011-421-55 622 73 78-80
      011-421-55 622 84 13 FAX
      hotel@...

      Hotel Centrum
      Juzna trieda 2
      040 01 Kosice
      011-421-55 678 22 57
      011-421-55 678 43 80 FAX
      hotelcentrum@...

They are about 2 blocks from each other on the same
side of the street. We prefer the Hotel Slovan, it is
a few dollars a day more than the Centrum.

I wondered why I hadn't written down the Danube, so I rechecked their website and saw why: their single room goes for more than my lodging allowance. I remember it being a really nice hotel when we were in B-slava nearly 4 years ago. The car rental office was in the lobby.

We found the "Danube", in Bratislava, to be very good. The location was ideal in that we could walk to many places, especially "Old Town".

Walk out the front door of the Slovan.

            Turn left (roughly south).

Walk two blocks, crossing the wide street "S^tu'rova".

The Centrum has a quaint Slovak restaurant, all in
rustic wood and the waiters wear traditional peasant
            clothing.

            http://www.pragueholiday.cz/kosice.html

If you turn right, you'll proceed into the old town
area, with the water fountain, opera house, St.
Elizabeth Cathedral, St. Michael Chapel, Franciscian
Church, and one of favorite watering holes the Zlaty
            Ban^a (gold mine).

The link above is to a site describing several hotels
in the area. We've had dinner at the Hotel Bankov and
it probably the best one there, but is quite a
distance from the center of Kosice.

what really impresses me is that the staff will come
in at some ungodly hour to make a full breakfast for

If anyone is willing to avoid the 5-star and more modern facilities
-- and want a less expensive place to stay -- try school dorms. On my
May term trips with college students, we stay in simple, yet
comfortable, school dorm rooms about a 5-minute walk from the centrum
in Kosice. The dorm is on a hill and overlooks the city. Great view.
The cost now is less than $10 per person per night! The first year
we took this trip (1999), the cost was about $2.25 per room (two
people). Two years ago, it was up to $6.50 per room.
HOWEVER, there is no restaurant in the dorm. But for younger people
who don't have extra finances, it was perfect. We'll be back in the
same dorm within a month. I'm taking eight students this spring.

Yes, the Turiec management also has been nice to me and my college
student group. (I take a group to Slovakia every other spring.) I
use Martin as my base camp -- and we take side trips from there. I
had told Helen that we usually stay at the Cierna Pani, a motel-type
lodging (with restaurant) about 2-1/2 blocks from the Martin centrum.
But a few years ago, because of an itinerary change, the Cierna Pani
could not take us for part of the time -- so we stayed a few days at
                              the Turiec.

Although the Turiec charged about a third more per room, they agreed
to give us the rooms at the same price as we had paid at Cierna Pani.
Of course, it helped that my Slovak friend did the talking. The CP
has about 12 rooms on the second floor. The building resembles a
home. One of the corner rooms has a small balcony. We usually get
that room because it's larger and can hold four single beds.

By the way, I will be leaving for Slovakia April 27 with eight media
students. We will spend 13 days at the Cierna Pani. For the story
seekers, this place has an interesting history. It was a prostitute
                              home back in the 20s.

Agree. The ethno museum is terrific. Also, if anyone is interested in
nature (biology, animals, etc.,) visit the nature museum in Martin.
It's across the street from the post office. Plus the art and
literature museum in the old Matica Slovenska building on the main
street. Not to forget the current Matica building atop the hill, just
beyond the ethno museum. That's where the state library is. Some
exciting exhibits there. And the Benko art museum near Cierna Pani
                                  (He was the national artist).
So, Martin has a lot of things to see --- these are just some of them
                                  within blocks of each other.

This group could probably create a large list of towns to visit and
things to see or do that will interest a travelor to Slovakia.

I don't know how to create the section on the web site but we should be
able to create a list of towns in Slovakia and have members propose
things to see and do in each one. Someone planning a trip to Slovakia
can download data for all of the towns of interest.
