FW: Disaster in High Tatras - Appeal for Help
- Dear Friends of Slovakia,
Slovakia¹s High Tatras are crying!!! On November 19, 2004, the most
beautiful mountains in Slovakia were hit by an unprecedented storm. Winds of
more than 100 miles per hour completely destroyed one quarter of the High
Tatras forest - almost 30 thousand acres, roughly equal to one year of wood
production in Slovakia. It is the largest ecological catastrophe in Slovakia
in the last 100 years.
It will take two to five years to repair all of the damage. The
reforestation of the area could take up to 20 years. The Slovak Government
has mobilized all necessary means to repair the damage and to return the
region to normal as soon as possible. Slovak citizens are trying to help
and appeal to their friends abroad to do so as well.
Please help recover the High Tatras, the treasure and symbol of proud for
Slovakia! By sending a financial contribution to the relief fund you can
salvage this lovely tourist destination. You can also help the people of the
High Tatras by spending your holidays there (many tourist facilities keep
operating, the damaged ones will be restored soon).
Please send your contributions!
