The root in _Ba'novce_ is _ba'n-_ (long [a]). It is not _ban~-_
(short [a]) = "mine." The vowels are as different and capable of
changing a word's meaning as those in the English caught and cot.

The "soft" (palatal) [n~] in _ban~-_ ("mine") becomes hard before [s]
in, e.g., Banska' Bystrica, but it stays soft before [o]. The name
would be _ban~ovce_ (short [a], soft [n~]) if it were to mean "mining."

The name of Ba'novce nad Bebravou has nothing to do with mining (and
the town has no mining history). The name was first recorded about
800 years ago as _Ben_, which may have been a personal name.
