THE GRAPEVINE JANUARY 2011
Volume 34, Number 1 January 2011
African American Gardenways:
Roots and Origins of a Tradition
What gardening traditions were brought from West and Central Africa? What were the gardens of enslaved people like? What varieties or cultivars can we trace to this heritage? Were there famous African American gardeners before the Civil War? These questions and more are answered in this presentation giving insight into the presence and role of enslaved and emancipated African Americans in early American gardening and food culture.
Michael Twitty is a recognized food historian, community scholar and living history professional of African American food and folk culture. He is webmaster of www.afrofoodways.com, the first website devoted to the preservation of historic African American foods and foodways. He has conducted classes and workshops, written curricula and educational programs, giving lectures and performed cooking demonstrations for over 100 groups including the Smithsonian Institution, Colonial Williamsburg, Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, Library of Congress, and the Oxford University Symposium on Food and Cookery. He is well known for his expertise in the history and heritage of enslaved African Americans and their foodways and his expertise in growing African American heirloom crops, open hearth cooking, heritage breed meats, and wild flora and fauna utilized by enslaved Africans and their descendants.

HOLY CROSS HOSPITAL HEALING
GARDEN SEEKS VOLUNTEERS
Holy Cross Hospital has approached our club asking for assistance in planning, planting, and maintaining the Healing Garden near the hospital’s main entrance. We would like to form a committee to visit the garden and evaluate the possibilities and the time commitment involved in such a project. If you would be interesting in participating on the committee, please contact Kathy Jentz at (301) 588-6894 or Laserblast@....
CLUB OFFICERS NEEDED
We urgently need to fill our First Vice President position for 2011. Should our President not be able to fulfill their duties, this position is vital to keep the club running smoothly. In addition, our club will turn 75 in 2015 and there is much we need to prepare for that celebration of our coming milestone anniversary. Persons interested in running for future office should contact Kathy Jentz at (301) 588-6894 or Laserblast@.... We need ALL of you to consider taking on leadership responsibility.
CLUB SCRAPBOOK ITEMS NEEDED
Eileen Schramm, our Club Historian, notes that the scrapbooks from the past are quite spotty. Please contact Eileen at 301.495.5768 or e.schramm@..., if you have scrapbook items to contribute. You can also bring scrapbook items to any club meeting.
Winter can be unpredictable. If it becomes necessary to cancel a meeting due to inclement weather, a message will be posted to the club’s Yahoo group— http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SilverSpringGardenClub/. If Montgomery County declares a snow emergency, there will be no meeting.
Please consider signing up to bring refreshments to our next meeting. We have more than 150 members, but it seems we rely on the same few to do the majority of our volunteer tasks. Due to Montgomery County regulations, refreshments must be store-bought.
