Group Description

On April 15, 1912 the Titanic began her 2 and 1/2 mile journey to the bottom of the Atlantic ocean.
Titanic... it has many different names: the Ship of Dreams, the Unsinkable Ship, but could it have been prevented? Was it a series of mistakes that lead to the demise of the Titanic?
Titanic was known to most as the voyage of discovery, but it would end up to be the last voyage that Titanic and many of her passengers would ever take again. As The boat was speeding it's way toward New York, Titanic struck an iceberg about 153km south of the Grand Banks of Newfoundland.
Thomas Andrews wanted to put enough lifeboats on the ship to accommodate for all on board the Titanic. Bruce Ismay thought that the boat deck seemed too cluttered so he convinced the building committee of this, and half of the lifeboats were taken off the ship.
At exactly 2:20 am Titanic was swallowed by the Atlantic ocean, in less than three hours, and even though there were lifeboats enough for half the passengers, they panicked and were loading the boats half full.
In the end 1,513 out of the 2,220 souls on board perished in the freezing ocean water.
Another ship, the Californian, was just 10 miles away...Close enough to have rescued the crew and passengers of the Titanic that night, but it did not respond to Titanic's distress calls. Their radio operator was off duty and asleep, and they thought that the flares were just Titanic celebrating their maiden voyage.
Titanic is now 2 and 1/2 miles (12,460ft./3,965m) below the surface of the water. It's been 92 years, but the memory of the disaster of April 15,1912 wiil live in our minds and hearts forever.
This is a group where these things can be remembered, discussed, and where we can learn things that we may not have known. Come in share your views, thoughts, and opinion in the tragedy that changed history.
