      July 1987

Billy Batson, a smiling young man with dark hair and bright black eyes, nodded confidently at his amiable assistant Whitey Murphy as he started a special live broadcast. The famous teen television personality had been a fixture at Station WHIZ for years and he enjoyed a loyal following among his audience.

He opened with his customary greeting as he stood in front of an ornate fountain on a gleaming complex whose opening had drawn a huge crowd.

"Hi folks! This is Billy Batson coming to you live on the grounds of the Hall of Justice on its grand opening to the public! This impressive structure was constructed by the Marvel Family, Spy Smasher, Bullet Man, Ibis, and other colorful members of the planet's top super hero group. It will serve as a headquarters for the group which has existed for years in a less official capacity. It will also be a museum that celebrates heroism in all its forms but as the World's Mightiest Girl Mary Marvel herself can tell you it's going to be a lot more than that!" he said.

He turned to a beautiful girl with long brown hair who wore a red and gold mini dress with matching cape and slippers.

"It feels a bit odd to be interviewing Mary as if she was just a friend and heroine but then again we can't let the loyal viewers know that she is really my sister Mary Batson Bromfield or that both of us were granted the ability to magically become super powered Marvels when we speak the magic word Shazam! Of course that word is the name of the wise old wizard who selected us as his champions and his acronymic name stands for the Ancient Elders whose talents we partake of as Captain Marvel and Mary Marvel!" he thought.

Mary smiled warmly at the audience as she spoke to the crowd.

"First, I'd like to welcome everyone to the Hall of Justice here on the corners of Beck and Binder. This building is meant to be a meeting place for the Squadron of Justice as Billy mentioned but we also want it to be a place where ordinary people can come to learn about heroes or bring their problems to our attention. We also want it to be a school of sorts where young people with special abilities may learn how to use them under the guidance of more experienced heroes and heroines. I suppose the best way to explain is to just say this Hall of Justice may be our new base but it is also a place for you all to meet and interact with those of us who might be in a position to help you in times of trouble! The old annual Marvel Family Round Table in which we read mail and selected people to help will now be conducted here with additional help from the other members! Consider this Hall as a reminder that we are here for you all!"

As the crowd cheered, whistled and clapped, Mary blushed slightly and then flew off toward the looming building.

"Folks, Mary Marvel will be just one of the swell heroes awaiting us inside. While some parts of the building will not be opened to the public, there is a lot to see and we'll be showing you as much as we can during this special program," said Billy.

As he switched to a commercial for Red O'Reilly's Garage, he glanced at the large crowd and smiled in recognition. He knew so many of the eager well wishers that had assembled to see the historic ceremony.

He noticed a bookish boy standing next to a beaming old lady.

"There's Dexter Knox the boy genius and his equally amazing grandmother! I could sure go for some of her oatmeal raisin cookies right now!" he thought.

He saw a gaunt man with a long white beard and a pointed nose.

"Good old Doc Quartz is here too! He even closed the pharmacy to be here. I should really take my girl Cissie there for one of his burgers this week!" he thought.

He smiled as he noticed a pretty demure blonde girl waving to him from the front row.

Near Cissie stood two remarkable figures a dapperly dressed tiger in a green plaid coat and a pretty female feline in a bright blue dress.

"Mr. Tawny and his girlfriend Gabby Tabby came but then he knows my secret and has been a loyal friend for years and years!"

Billy also saw the charismatic siblings Sunny and Goldie Sparkles, his lovely blonde secretary Joan Jameson, her soldier of fortune brother Jerry, the eccentric Professor Edgewise, the equally eccentric Dr. Thomas Kilowatt of Phonograph Hill, his landlords Pa and Ma Potter, his friend and employer Sterling Morris, Mary's adoptive parents the wealthy Bromfields, their butler Jives, and Freddy Freeman's boarding house chums Mrs. Wagoner, mechanic Red O'Reilly, cop Jim Bellows, and salesman Leroy Marx. The exotic European royal Prince Phrogue watched with his characteristically bulging eyes while two perfect physical specimens Beautia and Magnificus Sivana watched from the rear.

As Billy resumed his broadcast, he mused, "Holy Moley! It sure is nice to see so many good friends here today. It is funny how almost all of us first met back during World War II but we haven't aged naturally since we were trapped in suspended animation for so many years thanks to Dr. Sivana's Suspendium Trap of 1953!"

"A big gathering like this would be a perfect opportunity for another attack but SIvana himself is in jail now and his son Thaddeus Jr. has reformed. I'm not sure where Georgia is but she can't do much harm here since we have some extra protection guarding the whole place today!" he thought.

He referred to an elite group of six collectively known as the Lt. Marvels and the Lt. Mary Marvels.
These special individuals were either named Billy Batson or Mary Batson and through a special magical gesture on the part of the wizard Shazam, these six could gain their own versions of Marvel power by speaking his name under precise circumstances in the presence of their mentors!

"Cool Billy, Tall Billy, Hill Billy, Posh Mary, Marybelle, and Valley Mary all agreed to patrol the skies above to shield us from a repeat of the Suspendium Trap or any other attempt to spoil things by some of our old foes like Sivana, the Black Adam Family, Captain Nazi, Mr. Mind or the Black Rat!"

Meanwhile, within the impressive citadel several members of the Squadron of Justice were assembled within a secured area dedicated to trophies and crime fighting activities.

A handsome dark haired youngster in a blue and gold costume gazed around the room and smiled proudly.

"This is a grand day! I wish my grandfathers could have lived to see it but then again I suppose it was their tragic deaths that brought about the heroic births of me and my brother Kit. It took Captain Marvel's imparting his power to me whenever I say his name that saved my life after Captain Nazi killed my grandfather and left me crippled. It was a heavenly boon that gave Kit the ability to materialize at will and summon legendary figures from history or myth as Kid Eternity. It is funny how when Kit says his heroic name Eternity his powers activate just like I change from Freddy Freeman newsstand operator to Captain Marvel Jr, "thought Captain Marvel Jr..

He saw the other members of the Squadron of Justice mingling around the room and he noticed with a smile that Captain Marvel and Mary Marvel had just walked in to join them.

"Billy finished the broadcast!" explained Captain Marvel as he and his sister were greeted by the other heroes.

Spy Smasher (Jack Armstrong Jr.) was a rugged looking young man in a green costume complete with a goggled hood and red cape. He was in fact the second man to use the name since the balding blond man next to him had originated the role decades before.

Alan Armstrong smiled at his nephew Jack with pride and said, "You know your Aunt Eve would have been here but crowds still make her a bit nervous. Otherwise, she is doing fine! Our vacation did her a world of good!"

Alan referred to the fact that he and his wife Eve Colby Armstrong had taken a prolonged vacation after suffering through various traumas not limited to Eve's mental illness and subsequent recovery or his own decision to retire from the heroic life after learning that his long missing brother had in fact died but had left behind a son Jack!

Jack said, "I am so glad to hear that she is doing better! You've both been great to me and my sisters too!"

Alan clapped him on the back and said, "And you make a terrific Spy Smasher! You handle the new Gyrosub like an Ace! Don't worry, though, I have no plans to ever resume the role! This Virginian can't wait to see the Old Dominion once more!"

"Jack's doing just fine! He's making us old war horses look bad!" said an athletic man in a red, white, and blue costume!

"Minute Man's being too kind!" said Spy Smasher!

"Minute Man's being a wise guy like always!" said a grinning Alan Armstrong as his old friend Jack Weston broke into laughter.

Minute Man ( Jack Weston) was a diner owner from out West but he had spend much of his time as the patriotic One Man Army fighting in defense of his country! He had allowed neither the horrors of combat nor the trauma of losing decades due to Sivana's Suspendium Trap break his good natured spirit.

Ibis the Invincible held hands with his beloved wife the Princess Taia as they chatted with another equally attractive couple Jim and Susan Barr. The Barrs wore the gravity defying helmets and colorful costumes they had made world famous in their roles as Bulletman and Bulletgirl.

"Ibis, what do you think of the place? I'm pretty impressed myself! If I had had a lab like the ones here when I was a frail police scientist in 1940, I might have discovered the anti-crime formula that turned us into super humans much earlier than I did!" said Jim.

Susan said, "It was hard enough for this girl to lure you out of the lab as it was! Had you really had a bigger lab, I might have ended up as a slightly stunning old maid!"

Taia's watched them though long lashes expertly coated with heavy mascara. She was a radiant woman and she had a loving heart as well. She was devoted to her Prince and he returned the sentiment. Still, both of them enjoyed being with their friends.

Ibis said, "Not even the Ibistick itself could conjure up such a wonderful place! We shall face the perils of the coming days with steady hearts thanks to the citadel we had created!"

He referred to the magic wand that enabled him to work his magic. He had been a royal in ancient Egypt but treachery had left him little choice but to place himself and his inured beloved Taia into a sleep that carried them through the centuries to the dark days of World War II where both had awakened to renew their love and to fight menaces both occult and mundane in nature!

The final trio within the trophy room were marked by decidedly somber expressions.

Brain Butler was a lawyer turned Police Commissioner. He had also originated the role of the swashbuckling Mr. Scarlet with his son Rob serving as his sidekick Pinky. Now, Rob wore the red costume of Mr. Scarlet and Brian's orphaned ward Melanie Garde was the second Pinky. Melanie was a perky blonde teen in a pink mini dress and pleated skirt. She was not normally so serious in demeanor but she knew how troubled Brian and Rob Butler were on this otherwise happy day.

Brain was a graying man with a mustache and still possessed the built of an athlete. He had suffered a leg injury that still slowed him down a bit but he looked every inch the hero in his old costume.

"I don't know why I let you two talk me into pulling this union suit out of storage. I'm certainly not Mr. Scarlet these days nor do I wish to be!" he had said earlier!

Rob Butler was a young man who worked as a writer for the WHIZ television series "Mr. Clue" and he was very comfortable in his role as the new Mr. Scarlet and the senior partner to the irrepressible Pinky but he was devoted to his father and he felt the older man's pain deeply.

"Dad, you can't blame yourself! If anyone is to blame it is Dr. Sivana. What happened to Wade was just one more tragedy caused by the World's Wickedest Scientist and his Suspendium Trap!" whispered Rob.

Brian gripped his son's shoulder and managed a thin smile.

" Thanks, Rob. I suppose what makes me so angry is that I feel so helpless! Cherry Wade stood by us all those years as my secretary… as the love of my life… and then one senseless day robbed us of everything we shared! "

Pinky took his hand and looked up at the man who had become a second father to her after her real father's murder.

"I've heard of Cherry Wade! She must have been… must be great! What happened to her?" she asked.

"She didn't attend the ceremony honoring the Marvels in 1953 and so she was not among the crowd that was trapped with us all in the Suspendium! She aged normally while you and I remained in suspended animation up in orbit because of Sivana's trap. When we broke free in the seventies, we all were still the same age as we had been in 1953. It was just as if we closed our eyes in 1953 and opened them seconds later to find twenty years had passed! She was older and while she had loyally managed my business affairs in our absence so that we emerged wealthy and financially secure after years of struggle, she also felt that she couldn't continue our relationship! She insisted her age would come between us! I pleaded with her but nothing would change her mind!"

Rob softly added, "Cherry moved to California and we just learned today that she's critically ill! She's seventy now and I guess it is natural if painful to us both!"

Brian said, "We had a fight a couple of days before the 1953 ceremony. She was planning to come with us. She knew all about our secret identities, you see. I blame myself for everything that's happened to her since then. "

Pinky listened intently as tears filled her eyes.

"I knew things never quite clicked between Brian and Roz but I didn't suspect that he was still in love with Cherry Wade! It's so romantic and so sad!" she thought.

          Elsewhen….

A pretty if serious looking woman sat bent over a weird monitoring device and double checked her data.

"I'm right! This is the only time action may be taken! Perhaps I should say this is the only proper time action may be taken! The course of events of the Heroic Age will be decided this day and my own actions may decide far too much for my own comfort!" she thought as she stood up and began to strap a series of belts around her body.

"1987 here I come!" she vowed.

Captain Marvel smiled broadly as a jovial old man with plump cheeks and a portly belly stepped forward and cleared his throat in a rather self important manner. He was wearing a red and gold costume much like that of Captain Marvel himself.

"My esteemed colleagues, my very dear friends, it is with the utmost pride that I welcome you here this day. I am full of pleasure at the sight of so many brave and noble souls gathered together in one place!" he said.

"Uncle Marvel loves an audience, bless his heart!" whispered Mary.

Junior nodded as he said, "Uncle Dudley is so proud of being accepted as a Marvel even though we know he doesn't really have any super powers!"

Mary said, "I wonder why Freckles is late? She loves to hear Unk. use his ten dollar words as she calls them!"

Mary was thinking of yet another adopted Marvel. While Mary, Billy, and their friend Freddy all accepted Uncle Dudley as a sort of adopted uncle, he did have a real blood relation.

Dudley's real niece Francis (Freckles) Marvel was a rowdy tomboy with freckles, pigtails and a brave heart! She used to dress up like Mary Marvel and help the World's Mightiest Girl from time to time with her own brand of unique spirit and spunk!

Junior said, "If she's coming, I pity poor Rob Butler. She used to have a real crush on him when he was Pinky the Whiz Kid!"

Mary grinned as she said, "Yes, the poor dear! I hope she doesn't chase him too much today!"

Even though he was logically concerned about Cherry Wade and his father, Rob overheard the whispers and he gulped with annoyance.

"Freckles was a nice kid but she used to drive me crazy! I can't deal with her puppy love crush today!"he mused.

Uncle Marvel continued, "While many of us first joined together under the name Crime Crusaders Club and others were known as the Squadron of Justice, our teamings were unofficial even when we established a communications system in the fifties! We vowed to form a more permanent union after emerging from the Suspendium Trap in the seventies, and yet like many good intentions our efforts were met with infrequent success. We fought the good fight several times even on other Earths, but it was not until this day that we solidified our status as a true Squadron of Justice with a base of operations and a fully functional support staff!"

He gestured to where a shiny man made entirely of metal stood almost bashfully in one corner. A tiny metal dog yipped merrily at his metal master's feet.

"Timmy Tinkle and his loyal pet Fido have agreed to leave WHIZ to work here as a full time staff dedicated to making our operations run smoothly..to run like clockwork if our cherished friend will allow me the liberty of the expression!" he said.

Timmy seemed to grin broadly although his metallic expression did not change in truth.

"I'm happy to be here. We won't let you down!" he said.

As the group resumed their mingling Spy Smasher noticed a strange display among the other trophies.

"What is that? "he asked as he pointed to a calendar page dated October 1953. The calendar looked completely normal except for the fact that there was a blank square where the date of Oct. 14th should have been.

Captain Marvel came over to the young hero and said, "Jack, that calendar was make by Mary. She's very artistic. It represents an unsolved mystery in the lives of the Marvel Family. You see, Mary, Junior, and I lost that day. We have no idea what happened to it or to us. We simply went from Oct.13th to Oct. 15th! Mary called it the mystery of the missing day. We've never solved it. Even our mentor the old wizard could only tell us that it was a riddle that was not ready to be resolved!"
Ibis said, "And yet surely the proximity of that missing day to the day on which Dr. Sivana swooped down like some metal bird of prey and ensnared us within his infernal Suspendium Trap carries some fatal import?"

Junior added, "We've always thought so too. We were fine on the 13th. Then, we found ourselves on the morning of Oct. 15th when the mayor planned to honor us. We all went to the ceremony and got caught for twenty years!"

Pinky suddenly asked, "Why didn't anyone try to rescue you all? I mean surely Shazam could have done something!"

Captain Marvel said, "We asked him as well and he said that he was unable to interfere. I think as sad as he was to lose us for a time, that his magical Historama suggested that preserving so many of us so we'd be around to stop future threats was worth it in the end. He always looks at the biggest of the big pictures!"

Captain Marvel remembered his own questioning of the wise wizard shortly after he and his friends freed themselves from Sivana's trap in 1973.

He had approached the throne upon the Rock of Eternity and he had summoned the ancient wizard Shazam's spirit by lighting a brazier. As the venerable and beneficent old champion had appeared with his long white beard, kindly wise eyes, and long blue robe, Captain Marvel had swallowed hard.

He had felt oddly hesitant about questioning his mentor.

"Great Sir, I wondered…that is… holy moley… I'm sorry to stammer so! I don't mean to suggest that I doubt you or anything but why didn't you rescue us from the Suspendium?" he had asked.

Shazam had looked at the greatest mortal hero the world had ever known and he had sighed heavily.

"My son, you and your fellow Marvels have ever been more to me than merely my champions, you
have been my children! Although my existence both materially and ethereally has spanned eons, no period ever passed so slowly for me as did the twenty years you were separated from me within the Suspendium! I mourned for you all and yet I also realized that you would all be needed in the years to come! In order to preserve you and your noble allies for perils yet to come…including a cosmic crisis that loomed faintly in the future, I allowed you to sleep that brief but terribly long sleep! I knew that for you all it would seem as though only a few seconds had passed and I also knew the moment you would awaken! Thus, though it grieved me I allowed history to unfold in its relentless course! As it has been so shall it be!" he said.

Captain Marvel nodded and then said, "Thank you, kind sir! I should have known you knew best! I mean you always have!"

Unknown to Captain Marvel, Shazam had also thought, "And yet my son, infernal forces worked to cut off the dire date of the trap from any interference. It was at that moment that I mystically secured the entirely of your slumber so no force could do anything to harm you or prevent your predestined awakening!"

                    Elsewhen..

"Great Sir, I wondered.that is. holy moley. I'm sorry to stammer so!

In order to preserve you and your noble allies for perils yet to come.including a cosmic crisis that loomed faintly in the future, I allowed you to sleep that brief but terribly long sleep!

Subject: [Shazam Earth S Lives on] The Secret Origin of the Squadron of Justice- Mystery of the Missing Day 2

Cherry Wade stood by us all those years as my secretary. as the love of my life. and then one senseless day robbed us of everything we shared! "

Pinky took his hand and looked up at the man who had become a second father to her after her real father's murder.

"I've heard of Cherry Wade! She must have been. must be great!

Back in 1987, an alarm echoed and the heroes rushed to a sophisticated computer system.

"Holy Moley! The Mt. Malobar Observatory scanners say a huge meteor is headed for the Moon!"
                          cried Captain Marvel!

He said, "C'mon, Mary, Junior! We better handle this threat in space while the rest of you continue our celebration!"

As the Marvels minus Uncle Marvel flew into space, Bulletgirl smiled appreciatively.

"Who needs a Squadron when the Marvels are around? Of course, having this HQ and its trouble-alart computer makes it easier to know exactly when something bad is happening!"

Minute Man added, "And like we all decided back in 1973, by pooling our resources we'll be able to prevent things like Sivana's Suspendium Trap from catching us all off guard again!"

Alan said, "The curious thing is I was actually thinking that we should the Squad a more official and regular thing on the very morning of the Trap itself!"

Ibis said, "How strange Fate may be! I had the same idea that dire morning!"

Brian Butler frowned as he listened.

"I felt that way too. The detective in me doesn't believe that could have been pure chance!"

The heroes prepared to sit down to a meal when a strange apparition appeared before them!

She was a tall, lovely woman with very short black hair and bangs. She wore a simple outfit consisting of green shorts, white short sleeved blouse, and green high heeled boots; however, several utility belts crisscrossed her hips and her shoulders. Each belt seemed full with mysterious items.

Bulletgirl frowned as she posed with her hands on her hips.

"How'd she get in here? The tourists all left hours ago!"

Ibis said, "No magic was involved. I would have felt it if such forces were in play!"

Bulletman rubbed his chin and said, "Fascinating! She just appeared! No teleportation was used or the HQ's security system would have reacted!"

The pretty woman raised one hand in placation.

"I'm no threat! I'm here to alert you all to a peril beyond imagination! I am Steffi Swift. My great grandfather was known to some of you. He was Dr. Mark Swift the Chrononaut!" she said.

Bulletman said, "Of course! You're a time traveler! I should have taken that means of entry into account when I designed the security system!"

Alan Armstrong said, "Steffi, Miss Swift, I knew your ancestor Mark. I also knew his late teacher. Their work in time travel studies was groundbreaking!"

Minute Man said, "I met him in the 19th century of all places! How was or is or will he be?"

Steffi Swift said, "I have no time to chat. From my own base in the future I have detected certain ominous signs. There is a major time crisis occurring and only you heroes may prevent disaster!"

Mr. Scarlet (Rob) said, "Okay, what can we do to help?" He thought, "Maybe some action will get Dad's mind off Cherry!"

Steffi Swift said, "The Marvels have spoken to you of their mysterious missing day. I have come to reveal the secret of that date and to enlist you all in a crusade to prevent the Marvels from being removed from time itself by a would be tyrant who sought to destroy them so he could reign as the King of Time itself!"

Minute Man said, "You just missed them! They went into space!"

Steffi said, "I deliberately lured them away with a false report of danger in space because knowing their selfless natures, they would wish to join you in what will prove to be a deadly quest to prevent a terrible wrong from occurring! Had they been here, they would have rushed bravely into a threat designed to remove them from time itself. You will all have a better chance of success if you act without their knowledge or presence.

Uncle Marvel said, "If my family is in jeopardy, I want to help! What exactly is this mysterious threat?"

Steffi said, "In the year 1,000,000,000 an aggressive criminal named Zoltan was banished from the utopian society of the future to the year 1953. He swiftly used his own knowledge of future science to take over a Pacific island nation. From that base he tried to use the weapons of the future to conquer the past and to use ancient warriors to invade his future. He was stopped by the Marvels!"

Uncle Marvel snapped his fingers and said, "I remember being told about him. He was a dangerous man but he was no match for my family!"

Steffi said, "As a time traveler he has an advantage over many other criminals. He has the time and the knowledge to choose the best moment at which to attack his foes. He knew from history that they would be trapped from October 15t, 1953 to 1973; however, as an ambitious criminal who wanted to be King of Time, he wasn't satisfied with being safe from them for only twenty years. He decided to destroy them while they were in suspended animation but he was unable to reach them. Shazam had shielded them from any possible attack during their time in the trap. Zoltan decided to stop them from entering the trap and kill them on the day they were originally caught but again he was unable to do so. Certain infernal forces blocked any effort to alter the Marvel history on the date of October 15th. The irony was that evil forces wanted them to be caught and managed to seal that date from chronal manipulation while Shazam wanted to safeguard them once they were in the trap so they would be freed as history showed they would be. Zoltan realized the best he could do was to strike the day before the Marvels went into the Suspendium Trap! He managed to do exactly that. Now, my own studies of time travel indicate that this day is the only moment in history from which any attempt to stop Zoltan may be made. I have come to send you back to October 14, 1953 so you may stop Zoltan from removing the Marvels from history. If you succeed, they will only lose one so-called missing day and they will enter the Trap on the 15th as destiny dictates. They will emerge in 1973 and Zoltan's plan will have failed! I could not alert them to the threat because if they go back to 1953 they will be drawn directly into the trap he already has used on their 1953 selves!"

Bulletgirl said, "Okay, so if Zoltan did something to them on October 14th that temporarily removed them from time, we can assume that explains their missing day; however, doesn't history prove that
they were freed? I mean we all went into Sivana's trap with them."

Steffi Swift shook her head dismissively.

"History happened that way but history may be changed at any second. You must let me take you back to 1953 and you must stop Zoltan!" she said.

Minute Man said, "Wait! We know what we did on that date. I don't think I was even in the country for most of the 13th and 14th. I almost didn't make it to the ceremony itself so how could I or any of us have fought this Zoltan on that date?"

Steffi said, "The Minute Man of 1953 didn't fight Zoltan. As you said, he was on a plane during part of that time. It is the Minute Man of 1987 that must combat him in 1953."

Pinky said, "Wait. I once read a story in which a guy tried to go back in time to a point in his own life but he turned into a ghost. He could watch his younger self but he couldn't do anything else!"

Steffi said, "That is how time travel works in some alternate universes but not on in this one. Dr. Sivana himself has managed to disrupt Captain Marvel's origin in various ways on more than one occasion via time travel. However, to avoid creating any time and space disruptions, it is important that none of you make contact with your earlier selves. I also don't want anyone who was not born before 1953 to join us!"

Pinky said, "Man! I guess that lets me out!"

Jack Armstrong Jr. said, "Me too. Alan, I guess you need to be Spy Smasher again for this case!"

Alan nodded and said, "I'll do it, son."

Steffi looked over at Mr. Scarlet (Rob Butler) and said, "Will you also return to your original identity for this mission? "

Rob thought, "My old costume is on display here. It might just get Dad's mind off of Cherry!"

He said, "Sure. A slightly mature Whiz Kid is yours for the asking!"

                          Brian Butler nodded silently.

"I'll be Mr. Scarlet again as well for all the good it will do!"he said.

Steffi said, "Excellent! Ibis, Taia, the Bullets, Alan, Minute Man, Mr. Scarlet I, and PinkyI will accompany me to 1953. I will instruct you more precisely on the way!"

Uncle Marvel said, "And what of me?"

Steffi said, "You should remain here. A senior hero such as yourself might be needed for back up!"

The portly old man smiled broadly and said, "Yes, of course! Logical girl, very logical!"

Pinky said, "Where exactly is your time machine? Is it a car like in that movie?"

Steffi said, "I am the machine or to be precise the micro-filament gear I wear will transport me and all in my vicinity to our desired destination of October 14 , 1953!"

Rob said, "Pinky, you and Jack can hold down things here along with Uncle Marvel!"

Steffi spread her arms and the selected heroes gathered around her in a circle!

As a bright light swallowed them up and blocked them from the view of Spy Smasher II and Uncle Marvel, Pinky II made a sudden rash decision! She darted forward and dived directly into the rapidly fading light! In a blink of an eye they were gone!

Uncle Marvel frowned as he looked over at Spy Smasher II.

" We can't let my family know what has transpired here. They would indeed rush into peril. Perhaps we might summon some of our fellow crime fighters like Sunbeam, Lance O'Casey, Isis, and Golden Arrow to stand by in case we need them!"

Spy Smasher nodded and said, "I have a feeling that if the original Squadron of Justice can't handle this crisis no one else will be of much help!"

Thanks. I read those books as well many years ago. I may want to revisit them.

Back on October 13, 1953 Billy Batson, Mary Batson Bromfield, and Freddy Freeman were standing on the front porch of the palatial Bromfield home after a pleasant evening at the theater with Mary's adoptive parents.

"It sure was swell of the Bromfields to invite us to join you!" said Freddy.

Billy nodded and said, "I knew the movie would be a good one but the meal afterward was even better!"

Mary laughed merrily and said, "We were glad to have you both but there's no need for either of you to leave. Mother had Jives prepared the guest room. It is cool out and she didn't want you to have to walk home. After all it is almost midnight!"

Billy said, "She's a great lady. Of course, she doesn't realize that we could just fly home with the speed of Mercury!"

As the rich chime of a grandfather clock began to sound within the house, the three teens were suddenly engulfed in a blinding white light. When it faded from view, they were nowhere to be found.

Within a weird fortress constructed in the styles and with materials from many different eras, a fat man in a green and purple costume laughed harshly as he looked at the helpless trio. They were totally immobile within a light sphere of flickering light.

"I've done it! The Marvels are trapped outside of time itself! This day will go down in history as the dawn of the Age of Zoltan!" he bellowed.

At roughly the same moment in time the Squadron of Justice arrived in 1953! They were standing in a beautiful meadow bordered by tall lush trees and well- cared for hedges.

"I call this the Time Field!" explained Steffi.

Alan Armstrong was now dressed as Spy Smasher and Rob Butler wore the crimson costume he had made famous as Pinky the Whiz Kid. Ibis, Taia, the Bullets, Minute Man, and the original Mr. Scarlet (Brian Butler) were dressed as they had been before.

"I didn't even have to change!" said Rob.

Steffi Swift replied, "It was easy enough for me to simply alter your garments into those you had once worn before. After all, nothing is true lost to one who can sift through the sands of time at will!"

She said, "Zoltan has taken the Marvels but before you may free them you must stop five time bombs he has planted within this year from exploding. By placing these devices upon them, you'll be able to shunt them into a timeless void where they will do no harm! You will be returned here to this small safe portion of the time fields upon completion of your task."

She handed the heroes five small rectangular objects. Each one had a side that appeared designed to adhere to some other machine.

Minute Man said, "Time bombs? I suppose they aren't the kind of time bombs we're used to from our more mundane cases? "

Steffi shook her head and said, "No. These bombs are full of chronal energy. Each one has the potential to sever a segment of a timeline. If all his bombs explode he will have effectively sealed this era from any future arrivals by other time travelers!"

Ibis said, "I wonder if the fiend's technology could withstand my Ibistick? Surely it could undo any damage his machinations have wrought!"

Taia held his arm and said, "Beloved, no one could stand against your righteous power!"

Mr. Scarlet (Brian) said, "Why do you even need us? Why couldn't you handle this rogue time traveler yourself?"

Steffi Swift frowned and she flushed with either anger or shame.

"I'm a scholar not a combatant. To be honest this type of thing is all rather new and thrilling to me!" she said.

Spy Smasher said, "Don't worry, Miss. We'll take care of him! We'll stop his bombs. We'll free the Marvels and we'll capture Zoltan. You may rely on us!"

Bulletman grinned and said, "He's right. You just take us to the bombs and we'll do the rest!"

Bulletgirl elbowed her husband playfully and said, "My hero!"

Steffi spread her arms again and the heroes vanished. She turned to see Pinky suddenly spring into view.

"What are you doing here? You could have been lost forever in this place!" gasped Steffi.

Pinky said, "I'm sorry. It is not what you think! I want to help! I figured accomplishing something specific was worth any risk! You see, Brian's like a second father to me. Let me explain!"

The pretty blonde teen spoke rapidly and the older time traveler listened intently.

Subject: [Shazam Earth S Lives on] The Secret Origin of the Squadron of Justice- Mystery of the Missing Day 6

Bulletgirl rubbed her eyes as she found herself hovering over a jungle. The air was hot and she was glad that her costume consisted of her customary short sleeved red top and yellow shorts. She knew that the anti crime formula she had ingested long before had not only boosted her physical and mental attributes but had given her limited resistance to temperature extremes. This was useful when she was employing the antigravity helmet she wore to fly at high speeds or to reach high altitudes but as she rationalized on this odd day in 1953: sometimes a girl just feels hot!

"Mama might have said I was glistening but Dad would have just said I was sweating! I'd say in jungle like this, his frank down to earth view wins the prize!" she thought.

Bulletman was feeling the heat as well and he clutched the small device Steffi had given them as his eyes scanned the thick foliage.

"I don't see any artificial devices. If there's a bomb here it has escaped the keen observational powers of this police scientist!" he said.

Bulletgirl started to reply when a massive shadow fell over the heroes and a giant figure loomed into view!

He was a Korean soldier in a typical uniform of the time; however, he was a giant and his sinister smile was as large as a small car!

"Americans! I will crush you both and prove my superiority!" he said.

The Bullets scattered as his giant hand reached out for them. He was big and slow and they easily dodged his clumsy attempt to grab them.

"Somehow when Steffi said we were going back to 1953 I was thinking more of malt shops and Doris Day than the Cold War!" said Bulletgirl.

Bulletman said, "Right! Still, there's something odd about that soldier and I don't just mean his size!"

He scanned the giant closely and his keen vision detected a faint shimmer when the light hit him just so.

"He has an aura. I think he doesn't really belong here. He's been plucked from some other time although it may have been within this year. I think Zoltan's using him as a super human guard."

"His uniform says Mong. I can't say that I ever heard of a Kong sized Korean but why should I?"
                                        he thought.

Susan yelped as the giant soldier suddenly buried her beneath a cascading rain of dirt and sand that he had scooped up from the ground!

She sputtered indignantly as she kicked and fought her way to freedom.

"Okay! That tears it! He owes me a session with Mademoiselle Camille's! He's ruined my hair!" said Bulletgirl.

She flew closer to the giant and as her husband followed, she said, "Look around his neck! That's not tacky costume jewelry. I think he's wearing the time bomb!"

Bulletman nodded eagerly and said, "Can you distract Mong?"

Bulletgirl said, "You mean go into my patented Fay Wray only prettier act?"

Bulletman agreed and they separated by soaring away in a dazzling series of acrobatic moves. They really needed very little verbal communication because they had worked so well together for so long that they knew each other as only a loving couple could.

Buletgirl slowed down enough for the angry giant to grab her in one massive hand!

She braced herself with both high heeled boots pressed against the curl of his fingers and prepared to break free should he try to crush her!

"Mong has the beautiful one!" he roared.

Bulletgirl said, "Well, that's true but my partner has his good points too."

She batted her eyelashes at the giant just as Bulletman dived at his throat and made contact between the device he carried the time bomb that hung from his neck.

Instantly Mong the Giant vanished to his proper place in time and the Bullets found themselves back in the Time Field!

"We did it!" said Bulletman. "If we only had more time I'd love to have examined the ramifications of one being existing twice in the same era but the mission comes before my intellectual curiosity!"

Bulletgirl kissed him and said, "We'll have time for that later-assuming there is a later!"

Spy Smasher (Alan Armstrong) knew his way around Nazi Germany; however, he certainly didn't expect to find himself in the rubble and ruins of 1945 Berlin in 1953!

"Incredible! Zoltan's recreated or perhaps even stolen a section of Hitler's capitol city from the end of the war and placed it here in the early 1950's! I can't imagine all the possibilities of any science that could do that! It is the kind of science fiction my brother Jack and I used to speculate on when we were boys!" he thought.

"It's wonderful to see so much of Jack in his son! I think he'd be proud of him!" he thought.

He started to climb over a pile of bricks from a burned façade when he saw the gleaming time bomb directly in front of him!

"It can't be this easy!" he thought.

As he stepped forward carefully looking at the environment around him, he failed to see a remarkable sight.

Some of the rubble beneath his feet shifted until it assumed a humanoid form and loomed up menacingly in front of him! The creature looked like a garish, grinning, red eyed skeleton!

"Spy Smasher! While you are not the insipid Minute Man, a victory over you will be of equal pleasure to my masters!" he said in a strange high pitched voice.

He leaped at the hero and his legs swung around in a full circle as if his hips were constructed on a swivel.

Spy Smasher gasped as his insulated suit received a sharp impact from the weird figure's legs.

"He's like some freakish toy!" thought Spy Smasher as he punched the skull-faced villain in the nose.

The creature's head rocked backward and then returned to a normal position even as it clawed at Spy Smasher's face with jagged fingers.

Spy Smasher ducked beneath the gangly attacker's arms and kicked him three times in rapid succession.

"He just absorbed the shock! He can't be human! That's not a man in a costume!" he thought as he narrowly avoided being grabbed by the creature.

"I am Mr. Skeleton as your Americans would say but in the language of my masters I am Herr Skelett the
                                          Mord Maschine!" he cried.

Spy Smasher rolled forward and managed to pass between the gangly creatures's spread legs.

He jumped to his feet and fired at the capering creature with his sidearm.

The gun's special setting came in handy once more as the skeleton was bathed in a burst of flames from the flare gun feature of the weapon.

Spy Smasher dived by him and clamped the device he carried against the time bomb! As it shifted into limbo, he was returned to the Time Field.

He thought, "Once I was certain that inhuman being was actually a Nazi robot of some kind, it made it much simpler for me. I wouldn't ignite a normal human like that but I have no qualms about roasting a mechanical man!"

The original Mr. Scarlet (Brian Butler) and Pinky (Rob Butler) found themselves in a strange courtyard near an ornate palace. The architecture indicated that they were standing within what appeared to be ancient Baghdad!

They had no time to take stock of their surroundings before a bizarre figure on a flying carpet swooped down from a minaret and swung a scimitar at their heads!

"Down, Pinky!" shouted Mr. Scarlet even as his partner rolled forward out of the path of the portly man who rode the wildly swaying carpet.

"I am Pasha Plunda and you will die for invading my kingdom!" he cried.

"What craziness is this? I should be with Cherry! I should have always have been with her!" thought Mr. Scarlet.

Absorbed in thought, he hesitated a moment but Pinky had already vaulted upward to catch the end of the flying carpet and use its magically solid surface to propel himself into the fat Pasha!

They grappled on the carpet for a few moments but the older rogue was no match for Rob Butler's physical prowess!

The Pasha Plunda fell from the carpet and landed with a thud below.

Mr. Scarlet raced over and pulled him to his feet by his collar.

"Where's the time bomb? I don't care who you are or what Arabian Nights fairy tale you're playing here but I want answers!" he said.

He slapped the Pasha across the face with the kind of deliberate violence he had rarely displayed since his earliest days as Mr. Scarlet before Pinky became his ward.

Pinky (Rob) had dropped down from the carpet with his usual agility and now he hurried over to where his partner was about to slap their foe once more.

The Pasha cried, "Genie, defend me!" as he grabbed a small oil lamp that was hanging from his broad red sash.

A cloud of smoke began to pour out of the lamp and the two heroes drew back as the cloud assumed a humanoid shape complete with a mocking facial expression and two outstretched arms.

"As my master commands, so do I act!" said the mystical being.

Mr. Scarlet shook his head in disbelief.

"He's carrying the whole motif to the limit!" he said.

Pinky said, "Where's Barbara Eden when you need her?"

They exchanged knowing glances and in unison hurled pellets drawn from their belts at the looming specter!

As their own crimson mist mixed with the Genie's ethereal form, he cried out in shock and faded from view!

"It will take him a bit of time to separate himself from our mist although I doubt the narcotic agent in it will harm him!" said Mr. Scarlet.

The Pasha gasped as Pinky tackled him and pinned him to the ground.

"Okay, Aladdin. Where is the time bomb?" demanded Pinky.

The Pasha said, "It is concealed within the minaret.

"I agreed to safeguard it in exchange for time tossed slaves to populate my kingdom! I am the only living being here since my people disobeyed me and I cursed them with the Black Death eons ago! Zoltan promised to give me new subjects to rule in exchange for using my magic to safeguard his device!"

Mr. Scarlet said, "You idiot! He would have left you adrift in this limbo as soon as his bomb exploded!"

Pinky climbed aboard the magical carpet once more and soared to the minaret. In a few minutes he had deftly attached the device to the bomb and the time tossed Baghdad faded around them!

The duo returned to the Time Field but for Mr. Scarlet it was a hallow victory.

"Could that magical lamp had saved Cherry? I'll never know now! It's lost to me along with that city itself and its insane ruler!" he mused.

Minute Man shook his head as he materialized on what appeared to be a darkened concert stage.

"The place has some rather modern looking equipment. This is certainly not 1953."

The red, white, and blue clad Champion of Liberty made his way down the aisle toward the elevated stage. He casually vaulted from the aisle to the stage and glanced around the area.

"I see the Time Bomb! This may be entirely too easy!" he said.

He moved closer to the weird device and then he fell from the impact of a sudden blow.

He gasped as another blow hit him and he rolled over to see a colorful figure standing over him.

The man had long dark hair with a shocking streak of pink down one lock. He wore a garish make-up around his eyes and lips and he wore tight black leather from head to foot. He held a striped guitar slung across his chest like a weapon.

As he strummed the guitar with one gloved hand, waves of solid sound slammed into Minute Man again and again!

"What's wrong, old man? Don't you like my sound? Lawrence Welk is more your speed, huh?" he said with a sneer.

Minute Man pushed himself to his knees and said, "Who are you?"

The man laughed harshly and said, "Heavy Mettle! It's a pun. It's also my sound. See, my generation has what it takes. We won't let you tell us what to do. My music will break down the barriers your generation wants to impose on us!"

He hit the strings again and Minute Man reeled backward as blood began to pour from his nose.

"That guitar is a weapon of some kind. Clearly this punk comes from the present. I guess Zoltan recruited him from the 1980s!" he thought.

He weighed his options and then raised his hands in a placating gesture.

"Son, you are right. Most of my generation don't share your values or get your music. We …I…tend to live in the past. I guess that's my problem but you can't defend your music or your values by siding with a tyrant! Zoltan may have promised you a lot but you can't trust him. You hate my generation and its rules? Well, under his rule you sure won't be free to express that hatred. You'll be a slave or a soldier.
The only music Zoltan will allow will be the sound of crowds shouting his name or weapons destroying those who oppose him! Fight your battles if you choose to but don't be a pawn to a dictator like Zoltan!"

Heavy Mettle hesitated and then bent down to pick up the device Minute Man had dropped.

He walked over and placed it on the Time Bomb.

"I hear what you're saying. I think you have something there! Go kick Zoltan's head in for me. I'll serve myself from now on!"

As the scene changed and Minute Man found himself back in the Time Fields, he smiled ruefully.

"That wasn't exactly a conventional victory but I'll take it. I'll surely take it!" he said.

As Taia's high heels clattered across the floor of an arena, she screamed in horror at the sight of a hulking brute choking the life out of her husband!

Ibis was struggling futilely in the grip of a bare chested monster with rippling muscles and a Mohawk hair style.

"Ibac! That fiend is Ibac! The infernal forces that so often have opposed old Shazam and his champions created him from a helpless old street cleaner named Stanley Printwhistle. When he says Ibac he becomes the monster and only returns to normal after saying his name a second time!"

"He struck with such speed and violence that even Ibis was caught by surprise. We appear to be a Roman amphitheatre," she thought.

She grabbed the mystical wand known as the Ibistick which had fallen from her husband's hand when Ibac ruthlessly attacked from the rear.

Ibis was fighting to break Ibac's grip but the bigger man was much stronger and he fought with an almost manic frenzy.

Ibis brought both hands up and struck each of Ibac's ears at the same time.

The brute roared in anger and slammed Ibis's head against the floor.

Taia didn't try to break the villain's grip, she knew better. She was a smart, courageous, beautiful woman who knew her sultry looks often led people to misjudge her character. She was a princess and she was capable of facing hardships without fear or hesitation. Thus, she merely slipped the wand into Ibis's hand.

                                                "Ibistick free me!" he gasped.

Instantly the magic force hurled Ibac across the room.

Ibis allowed Taia to support him as they rose from the ground together.

"Ibistick contain him!" cried the Egyptian Prince!

Ibac rushed forward only to be snared within a block of stone.

"You can't hold me! No one can cage me!" he bellowed as he smashed through the stone and lurched forward at the duo.

"Beloved, can you make him say his name? That will change him from beast to meek human once more!" said Taia.

Ibis stared at the monster with piercing eyes of character and intellect and compassion.

"I do not know. I shall take another path. I will liberate poor Printwhistle from the curse of Ibac once and for all!"

"Ibistick separate man from monster! So do I command it!" he cried.

A glow surrounded Ibac and he screamed as a smaller frail old man suddenly fell out of the brute's body.

"Oh dear! Did I do it again?" whispered Stanley Printwhistle!

Taia took his hand and whispered, "Do not fear, sir. Ibis had freed you from the infernal course. You may say the word Ibac all you wish. You will no longer turn into that being. He now lives as a separate creature and his sins are all his own!"

Ibac laughed as he realized what had happened!

"Ibac is free! Ibac! Ibac! Ibac! I can say it over and over! No one will ever trick me into turning back into him again!" he gloated.

Ibis smiled coldly and said, "That is true; however, this liberation also beings you may now be dealt with as your crimes merit. No longer will mercy for your host compel me to stay my hand!"

Ibac's black eyes narrowed in confusion or possibly in animalistic fear.

"Ibistick imprison him within the Time bomb!" he said.

Ibac vanished as a gleaming Time Bomb loomed over him.

Ibis calmly placed the device Steffi Swift had given him and smiled with satisfaction as the scene changed!

Back in the Time Field, he kissed Taia and said, "It is done! Stanley is safely in the time he was taken out of and Ibac is in limbo. Justice is served and more vitally important so is mercy!"

She smiled at them with a kind of wonder and thought, "These heroes are truly amazing. It is satisfying to see that their legends are based on truth!"

She said, "You have thwarted Zoltan's efforts to safeguard the point of entry into the time of the Marvels. Now, you must free them and stop his plans of conquest! He has a sense of irony. He came from a million years in the future. He now lurks a million years in the past! I will send you there and you must defeat him and return the Marvels to October 15, 1953. They will have no memory of what occurred on their missing day but history will be restored thanks to your courage!"

The team vanished before they could speak.

Instantly they found themselves in a city made of stone. They saw no occupants but an ominous obelisk towered over the silent city and a sense of peril filled all their hearts.

"A serpent like Set himself!" whispered Taia.

Bulletman said, "Amazing! This city is both primitive and yet otherworldly. I have a theory that explains the dichotomy but I hesitate to voice it!"

Minute Man grinned and said, "I'd deduce it was built by a bunch of snake men from space!"

Bulletman frowned as he said, "Crudely put but accurate in general. How did you know I was going to say that?"

Bulletgirl smiled and said, "He looked over your shoulder, honey!"

As Bulletman turned he saw a hoard of humanoids racing out of the stone structures. They were green and covered with scales with the elongated snout and ridged skulls of alligators!

"Great Scott! There must be dozens of them! I seem to recall reading about creatures like them in a paper! The Marvels stopped them from invading 1953 from a tunnel that led through time to this era! They were called Hissmen by Captain Marvel!" said Spy Smasher.

Mr. Scarlet raised his fists for battle as he thought, "Why am I here? I should be with Cherry. If I had only hung up this hood decades ago I might have been with her all these years. Rob is more than capable of being Mr. Scarlet."

Rob glanced at his father and guessed his feelings if not his thoughts.

"I'm worried about him. He's almost a broken man. I have to watch out for him until this case is over!" he thought.

"At least Pinky is not getting into trouble!" he thought.

Little did Rob Butler realize that Pinky (Melanie Garde) had already embarked on a mission all her own.

The blonde teen had talked Steffi Swift into discarding her scholarly reluctance to interfere in time travel long enough to transport the Whiz Kid to one particular spot in 1953 where the spunky girl was about to take a remarkable risk.

She smoothed her long blonde curls and inhaled sharply as she approached a pretty brunette woman outside an urban law office.

"Cherry? Miss Wade? This may sound crazy but I need to talk you. You see, I know all about you and Mr. Scarlet. I'm from the future and you just have to believe me!" she began.

Back one million years in the past, inside the city of the Serpent Men, the Squadron of Justice members were fighting nearly hopeless odds!

Ibis raised his wand and shouted, "Ibistick repel them!"

The magic drove the attackers backward but they seemed tireless and surged forward again and again!

"As a boy in ancient Thebes, I had a tutor who showed me a parchment concerning serpent men who supposedly ruled the world eons ago. They were said to have fallen from the stars. Clearly, these Hissmen came to earth from another planet and were mistaken for gods or monsters! In either case, we are sorely pressed to deal with such numbers!" Ibis thought.

As Bulletgirl kicked a Hissman in the snout, and Mr. Scarlet and Pinky knocked two more to the ground, the fight abruptly stopped for a moment as red beams shot out of the eyes of the Serpent obelisk!

The beams hit Minute Man and he shuddered as if in pain before slowly turning green and scaly!

"I'm changing into a Hissman!" he cried.

"You got to fix this! Green is not my color!" he said as he fought the horror of his transformation.

"I should have been the one to say that!" said Bulletgirl.

Spy Smasher said, "I think better rally around the obelisk! Ibis, can you get us on the platform at its base and shield us?"

Ibis nodded and said, "Ibistick, take us to the obelisk and protect us!"

Instantly, all of the Squadron including the shocked Minute Man were transported to the base. A gleaming shield surrounded them as their enemies charged at the force field again and again!

"I may not maintain its integrity for long!" said Ibis.

Minute Man said, "I'm feeling funny. It's getting hard to concentrate!"

Bulletman thought, "The change is working on a mental level too. He's going to forget his humanity. I wonder if that is how the Hissman expand their numbers? They may turn helpless folks into new recruits!"

He said, "Bulletgirl fly Spy up to the top. He and I may be able to reverse the change and do some good to our cause!"

Bulltegirl carried Spy Smasher to the base of the serpent's skull where her husband had already ripped open a cover to reveal a weird control board.

"First floor: lingerie and high heels!" she joked.

Spy Smasher and a hovering Bulletman began to work as they struggled to understand the alien science.

"We may be the best hope for the planet. Alan's inventive mind and my boosted intellect combined may pull this off!" thought Bulletman.

They made several adjustments while their friends watched and waited. A restless Minute Man began to hiss instead of speak.

Finally, as the shield began to break under the continual assault of the Hissmen, the heroes activated the beams once more!

Minute Man gasped and the slowly returned to normal!

                                                  "Good job!" he cried.

Spy Smasher said, "Bulletman, let's use the ray on the Hissmen! Some may have been humans to begin with and the others might be too demoralized by a change to fight!"

Bulletman grinned and said, "Great idea!"

They broadened the range of the ray and it swept across the area!

Slowly all of the Hissmen began to change into humans!

While some rejoiced in their freedom others displayed the same horror and confusion that had come over Minute Man after his own change!

Ibis smiled as he ordered his Ibistick to put them to sleep!

"Their slumber will be brief but this will certainly buy us some time!" he said.

Bulletgirl said, "Look! On the top of that hill is a strange citadel!

It looks like a combination of architectural styles from dozens of eras! Tacky, isn't it? It would be like my wearing a mini skirt over a muumuu!"

Mr. Scarlet said, "Ibis, take us to the Marvels! Let's end this!"

Ibis announced the order and his wand did the rest.

The heroes stood within the citadel and fazed at two golden circles.
One disk was mounted to the roof while the other was on the floor below, between the two disks was a milky white energy field and within that odd cloud stood Billy Batson, Mary Batson Bromfield, and Freddy Freeman! They were transfixed by the device and as the heroes had been warned, apparently the kids were trapped outside of normal time and space!

Bulletman said, "I think I can free them and send them back to October 15, 1953 so they will enter the Suspendium Trap along with our 1953 selves and history will be restored. Of course, they will still not know the secret behind their missing day!"

"Not so fast, you primitive!" cried a fat man in a green and purple costume!

"I am Zoltan, King of Time! I didn't expect to be challenged by anyone with the hated Marvels out of the way. Of course, there's nothing you powerless dolts can do!"he said.

Minute Man said, "Really? Don't count your timelines before you're finished! "

Zoltan laughed harshly and patted his broad gold belt.

"My time belt can take me to the past or future! I could kill you before you were out of your mother's womb!" he said.

He smiled wickedly and added, "I could kill your great grandfathers and your family lines would end well before your births!"

Pinky (Rob) said, "You're outnumbered! Your Hissmen are not going to help you! They have problems all their own!"

Zoltan grinned and said, "I'm outnumbered? You poor deluded caveman! Look around you, my chronal iterations will overwhelm you in a matter of seconds!"

He gestured to where over a hundred identical Zoltans surged from every side until the first Zoltan was absorbed into their crowd and the heroes were completely surrounded.

One Zoltan grabbed Taia and drew her into his arms as his counterparts tackled Ibis and the others!

"You are lovely! I might make you my concubine!" he said.

Taia slapped him across his face.

Ibis struggled to reach his Ibistick as the Zoltans battered him from each side.

The Bullets were fighting equally fiercely as were Spy Smasher and Minute Man! They were stronger and more skilled as fighters but the sheer number of Zoltans threatened to defeat them.

Mr. Scarlet, ever the detective, noticed something interesting.

"When Taia slapped the Zoltan who was caressing her, he flinched as did every one of the other Zoltans! I think he is the original and whatever happens to him, happens to them all1' he thought.

He broke free of the pack and with Pinky by his side, he charged toward the Zoltan who was struggling with a kicking and punching Taia!

With one smooth acrobatic move, he flipped directly into the fat Time King and punched him in the nose. Pinky followed his father with the certainty born of years of partnership.

He ripped the gold belt off of the startled Zoltan as Mr. Scarlet connected with three stunning blows that knocked Zoltan cold!

As the original Zoltan passed out, all of his chronal iterations blinked out of existence!

Bulletman rushed over and swiftly adjusted the device holding the Marvels and as they vanished, he smiled.

"It worked! The kids are back where they belong!" he said.

Taia and Ibis had rushed together as their foes vanished and now they shared a passionate kiss.

Spy Smasher said, "Well done, Scarlets! You two really saved the day!"

                                                  Mr. Scarlet shook his head.

"I'm glad but what good have we really done? I wonder if Steffi Swift could help me stop my 1953 self from going to the Marvel ceremony? I might manage to stay with Cherry all those years! Of course, that would mean I also might not have been here today or I might not have been there months ago when I saved Rob from the Murder Prophet. I can't risk trading the life of one loved one for another! I suppose I have to let time run its course!" he thought.

Rob said, "I've cuffed Zoltan. I'd say Steffi can take him to some future jail where he won't be able to disrupt time again!"

As he said the girl's name, she appeared and smiled winningly at them all!

"You are truly heroes! You have restored the proper timeline! While your 1953 selves will not learn what your future selves have done on this date until they reach the date I contacted you, I know some lingering feeling that you all should form a more permanent team will resonate through the ages to your earlier selves! That will explain the feelings some of you had on the morning of October 15, 1953 that you should unite!" she said.

Minute Man smiled and he said, "This was some case! I guess when we get back to the present, the Marvels will have returned from the wild goose chase you sent them on! I suppose we can't explain it to them without risking messing up history!"

Steffi smiled and said, "You are correct. You may say it was a computer error of some type of perhaps a prank by some misguided being!"

Rob whispered to his father, "We won! That's got to count for something! You saved us all with that quick thinking!"

Mr. Scarlet nodded as he thought, "And yet what will have changed for me personally? I will still have lost Cherry!"

As the heroes returned to the present and their HQ, they noticed that the Marvels had returned from space as well.

Uncle Dudley and Jack Armstrong were chatting with them in a nervous manner until Jack saw Alan wink at him.

"They saved the day! We can rest easy now!" thought the new Spy Smasher.

Alan and Rob were both dressed in their original outfits from before their time trip.

The heroes laughed and talked and followed Steffi's suggestion regarding how to account to the Marvels for the false emergency in space.

Bulletman said, "Sorry, guys. I suppose I still have to work a few bugs out of the trouble alert system!"

Mary Marvel said, "No problem! We made a race out of it!"

Captain Marvel turned to Mr. Scarlet II (Rob Butler) and said, "By the way, Rob, I'm sure sorry Brian couldn't come to the opening today. He may have given up the costume to you but he's still welcome here!"

Rob nodded and said, "Thanks. He didn't want to leave his wife.

Cherry and Brian are on a sort of second honeymoon! You know, this year marks their 14th wedding anniversary and they are still like newlyweds. He sent his regards to you all!"

Pinky (Melanie Garde) smiled as she listened to her partner.

"I did it! Steffi allowed me to see Cherry Wade in 1953 and I convinced her that she simply had to go the Marvel ceremony in spite of the argument she had had with Brian! Apparently, she did go and history was changed! She stayed frozen with Brian and Rob and the others from 1953 until 1973 and didn't age after all! She married Brian in 1973 and never became the old dying woman she originally was on this date! We couldn't change the Marvels destined time in the Suspendium Trap but we were allowed to change Cherry's fate!"

The pretty blonde girl in the pink dress frowned as she realized that she was starting to forget that she had ever changed time. Instead she was retroactively gaining memories of experiences she now had had with the married Brian and Cherry.

"She's like an adopted Mom to me!" she suddenly thought.

As the party began to wrap up a stunningly beautiful young woman with auburn hair walked into the room.

"Freckles! Is that you?" gasped Rob Butler as he realized the beauty had once been the gangly kid he had tried to avoid.

She laughed and said, "Why Rob, I haven't used that nickname since we got out of the Suspendium. Of course, I admit I have changed a lot. I'm not the tomboy I used to be! I'm actually late because I broke a heel and decided to go home and change. I wanted to make a nice impression on you all!"

Rob came closer and said, "Why don't you tell me all about yourself over dinner?"

The Squadron of Justice had been more firmly established than ever before and they had saved their own histories. As Pinky forgot the last memory of what she had done with Cherry Wade in 1953, she turned to watch her partner make the first steps in creating memories all his own with the newly glamorous Freckles Marvel!

A good story. I liked the basic battle scenes. They really are reflective of the era from whence the Fawcette comics originated. Nice job. /FM ... From:

Subject: [Shazam Earth S Lives on] The Secret Origin of the Squadron of Justice- Mystery of the Missing Day 12

The Squadron of Justice had triumphed over the Time Bombs and true to her word; Steffi Swift had returned them to the Time Field.

                                                    The End

Or is it more like the case of Buffy Summers' sister Dawn, who didn't exist in

I intended for all stories to have happened as depicted when they occurred but now folks remember them with the difference that Brian and Cherry married in 73 and of course his relationship with Roz was only a friendship/business relationship. Kind of like Roy Thomas handled Crisis. The All-Star Squadron photo in the last issue showed Superman when it was taken but by end of the same comic, the photo no longer had him in it- if you get my drift. A retroactive change in character's memories but not in how the stories actually happened at the time.
You summed it up better than I did when you referenced Buffy.
