      Help Make October 11 a
      National Day of Antiwar Action!
An open letter to all those against the war:

The Seattle Antiwar Action Coalition (SAWAC) is a newly formed,
diverse and democratic coalition looking to turn the massive antiwar
sentiment in Seattle and the Northwest into a vibrant movement with
the power to end the war. We are planning a march and rally in
Seattle on October 11, and strongly encourage antiwar activists
throughout the Northwest to join us in Seattle or organize antiwar
activities in other communities for that date.

Why October 11? It was on October 11, 2002 that Congress approved
the "Iraq War Resolution" granting the Bush administration
authorization to invade Iraq. October 11 also falls four days after
the seventh anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan, and one
day before Indigenous People's Day, the 516th anniversary of
      Columbus' invasion of
the Americas. Let's take a stand against war and occupation anywhere!
March, 2008, ushered in the sixth year of war and
occupation "without end" on Iraq. October 7, 2008 will mark seven
years of occupation of Afghanistan. For the Iraqi and Afghan people
these have been years of terror, death, and destruction. Hundreds of
thousands are dead and millions displaced. Entire populations live in
a nightmare state, where daily necessities and basic human rights are
impossible dreams. In an act of arrogance and impunity, a Democrat-
led Congress has approved another $162 billion in funding for the
wars on Iraq and Afghanistan. Stepped up threats against Iran and the
increased likelihood of a U.S. troop "surge" into Afghanistan point
to an imperative for action from the peace and justice movement.

In light of these developments, grassroots forces from around the
country came to Cleveland at the end of June for the National
Assembly to End the Iraq War and Occupation. 95% voted in favor of
supporting pre-election protests on October 11, 2008. Demonstrations
are now being planned for many cities, including Boston, Pittsburgh,
Chicago, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Salt Lake City, and Seattle and
the list is growing. The weeks ahead promise to be filled with debate
as the election campaigns gear up. Millions of people across the
country will be following and engaging in political issues and
discussion. October 11 gives us the opportunity to inject the antiwar
agenda into the intensifying debate, to say no to the devastation of
war abroad and its crippling economic effects at home.

Planning is taking place at SAWAC meetings every Tuesday evening at 7
p.m. Please add your voice to the discussion. Contact us for more
information and find a way to get involved. The time to act is NOW!
Together, we can stop the war! Meeting location: Central Lutheran
Church, 1710 11th Ave, Seattle. After school begins in September,
meetings will be at Seattle Central Community College, Room BE1110.
