- Robotic rat explores and learns by touch alone
Just like real rats, the sense of touch is crucial for the SCRATCHbot, which can identify objects using its whiskers. The underlying technology is unclear, but Bristol Robotics Lab, which is a partner in the project, does say the active array consists of 18 active “whiskers” with an additional non-actuated micro-vibrissae array on the nose. The head also articulates. The robot is being demonstrated outside the lab at a conference today.
