Now is the time of year to get your local events on your local Boy Scout Council and Districts annual calendar, which usually follow a school year but are distributed in June.  It's a great way to pitch Ham Radio to Scouts. Here's what we're sending out:

      Radio Scouting Events

      Mercer Area District

      Central New Jersey Council

Amateur Radio and Scouting have been linked since the very first edition of Scout Handbook included instructions on building your own "wireless station".  In Mercer Area District, a number of upcoming activities will be available to help Scouts advance and learn about radio.  Specific details will be sent in announcements to the district e-mail patrol as they get confirmed, but save the dates now.   All are open to both Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, except for the Radio Merit Badge Day as Cub Scouts are ineligible to earn merit badges.

Field Day - Saturday June 23rd and Sunday June 24th.

Field Day is nation's largest annual emergency exercise with 35,000 hams demonstrating that they can set up portable radio stations from scratch and operate them for 24 hours without commercial electricity.  Visitors are welcome and Scouts can meet SOME of the requirements for Radio and Emergency Preparedness Merit Badges in an hour or so visit.

This year's event will be at Mercer County Central Park near the Skating Center and visitors are welcome from 2PM Saturday to noon Sunday.

Local details will be sent by the e-mail patrol as they get confirmed.

Scouting Sunrise Amateur Radio Network - Wednesday August 1st

In conjunction with the World Scout Jamboree in England , Ham radio operators will link Scouts around the globe to the Jamboree at local sunrise to celebrate the 100th birthday of Scouting.  Local ham operations for this will probably be at the Delaware Valley Radio Association station at Mercer County in Ewing from 6 AM to 9AM that morning.

This one time event is described at

      http://home.tiscali.nl/worldscout/2007/Sunrise%20Network/Sunrise%20Network.htm

Local details will be sent by the e-mail patrol as they get confirmed.

Jamboree on the Air – Saturday October 20

Each year Scouts from around the world talk to each other and earn a patch by participating in Scouting's largest annual event Jamboree on the Air.  This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of this event.  We're still working on setting up a special event station at Quail Hill, but in any event we will be participating somewhere locally.

Local details will be sent by the e-mail patrol as they get confirmed.

Radio Merit Badge Day - Saturday January 5, 2008

Are you interested in helping people during disasters?  Want to learn about satellites and high tech electronics?  Want your computer to connect around the world via wireless?  Think it would be cool to talk to Astronauts in space?  Well Radio Merit Badge Day at Sarnoff Labs in Princeton Junction will held on January 5, 2008 to help Scouts earn this merit badge in a special one day course. Adults interested in learning about radio are welcome to participate.  Online registration details will be posted in November.

Contact Gary Wilson at 609-890-XXXX or email XXXX@... if you have any questions about these Radio Scouting events.
