      Scout Camps on the air:

In response to this thread, the global APRS system
called FINDU (by K4HG) can now search the globe in real
time to capture all APRS stations transmitting the SCOUT
      symbol. Using this query:

      http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/symbol.cgi?icon=/,&limit=100

I got about 30 results. and some interesting facts: only 3%
of them are in the United States but a third of them are in
Canada. But of course this data is almost insignificant
because the SCOUT symbol has only been in APRS for
a few years and is not widely known. But lets change that!

But now that we can search APRS globally and live for
stations on the air, this gives incentive to scout camps to
use that symbol when they have their APRS stations on
the air or to at least trasnsmit an APRS SCOUT object
at their location from their mobile while they are on the air.

From a D700 or D7, mobile, this is trivial to do. Just go to
your APRS menu and select from the STATION ICON
list select OTHERS and enter a comma for the symbol
and "/" for the table. Send out a few packets and your
station will now appear on the map and FINDU as an
      active station.

Unfortunately, the FINDU maps don't show the Scout
symbol yet, because it has not been updated with the
APRS1.1 symbol set yet... but your APRS software should.

Using APRS to identify diverse but jointly participating
stations all over the globe is a significant asset. For
example, using the PORTABLE symbol for FD is another
      good example.
