JOTA is just the start!
- It's great to see all of the folks here planning to operate on
JOTA this weekend. But remember JOTA is just the start of the
Scout's trail to Radio Merit Badge and then on to their own
Amateur Radio License. Make sure that the trail is well marked for
Each Boy Scout who participates in JOTA should be given a flyer
about your upcoming Radio Merit Badge Class. (You have planned one,
right?) You can download a sample flyer and all of the materials
you need to teach one from the files section of this ScoutRadio
Have each Boy Scout who makes an on the air contact record on a
piece of paper the details of his contact just as if he was entering
it in your station log. Also point out the organization of your
station and the type of equipment to the scout. Then tell him he
just completed requirements 7a2 and 8 for the Radio Merit Badge!
The fact that he has just earned a "partial" in the merit
badge will make him eager to continue. So make sure he knows about
the upcoming class or has the very least leaves with the name and
phone number of a local Radio Merit Badge Counselor.
Have fun and I'll see you on the air from K2BSA/2 at the Merit
Badge Midway of the Central New Jersey Council Camporee!
