Family Tree DNA Review
- I ordered a DNA test kit from Family Tree DNA because I had to know what could be learned from my own DNA. I knew there was some science to this but I assumed it was mostly guess work at this point in the technology aspect of it.
The test came which basically consisted of a couple swabs and small containers along with simple instructions on how to use this to get the best result. I twirled it around my cheek for a minute or two it put it in the small container. The instructions told me to do it twice to ensure less of an error. I sent the containers in the package they sent to me, and sent it back to Family Tree DNA. My immediate thought was wow, I can't believe these experts are going to play with my slobber.
A few weeks later I received an email stating my DNA results were in so I went to their website and logged in. At first the website seemed intimidating. Though as I read through the site I started to understand more it was ready to understand what my DNA had to tell me.
I took a Y chromosome test which analyzes the DNA that is passed from my father. I took a 67 marker test, which after researched, I realized this is the most comprehensive marker test. Forensic specialists normally use a 12 marker test to learn of the victims and murderers. I also took a Mitochondrial DNA test which is the DNA that was passed from my mother.
The Y chromosome test I did had 67 markers analyzed. Family Tree DNA has a database that matched me with other people's DNA. I had several close matches, though 2 of them matched with me 65 of 67 markers. This meant the chances of them being closely related to me were extremely high. After emailing them both, one emailed back with his family tree and we found out we were 3rd cousins. Awesome, I have family in Canada. My Y chromosome DNA also shows a pattern and similar DNA attributes with others that show we all migrated from certain parts of the world. Between my relative discoveries and parallel DNA attributes with others, I was able to understand I had come from Northern Ireland at one point. Though my DNA was first present in Africa.
My Mitochondrial DNA was also tested which shows my mother's side migrated from England which I was able to further prove through family tree matches.
Every time I enter the site I learn more and more about my family past. I am extremely glad I gave this a try. There is more science to this then I could have imagined. Family Tree DNA gets a 5 star rating from me, bless modern technology! To learn about Mitochondrial DNA and Y Chromosome DNA Testing start here.
