Hello and welcome to this new group which is for anyone in the UK and Ireland with German ancestry although with particular interest in Scotland.
My paternal family were Mitchells from Glasgow, with a German connection. To date I have found it very difficult to discover anything to help me research German connections in Scotland, or discover about German immigration to Scotland in the early to mid 19th century. Or earler. I did join the Anglo-German Family History Society but it mainly pertains to England, London in paticular. Lots of Mitchells when I "Google" the name, with variants of the name for those with German ancestry, but they all seem to have emigrated to America!
All I knew about my paternal great-grandfather Lewis Mitchell was "family folklore" that he was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Emphasis was on the "am Main". Then I found his marriage registration. He married in Glasgow in 1855, his bride was Mary Dougherty born Cork, Ireland. His place of birth threw light on the family folklore as it said "born and registered in Frankfurt, Germany" in July 1833. Lewis and Mary were 22 years of age when they married. I found nine of their children but some appear to have died young. Those who appear to have survived were named Lewis (b1856), Mary Ann (1862), Elizabeth (1868), Catherine Isabella (1870), George (1875) and Helen (1878).
Lewis Michell died in Glasgow in his late forties in 1881. His son Lewis Mitchell died in 1934, his death registered by his brother George Mitchell. Lewis the son had several children by his first marriage, and he was a master slater. His father also appears as a slater in the 1871 census, and on his death registration, although gives his occupation as glazier on his 1855 marriage registration.
More family folklore was that German born Lewis Mitchell was originally Louis "Meeshler" - that is how it was pronounced. I have tried to search many variants incuding Miechler, Mieschler, Meichler, Meischler, Mitchel, Michel, etc.
After his marriage I did find Lewis on the 1861 Glasgow census as Louis Mitchile. On the 1871 census he is Lewis Mitchell.
When he married in Glasgow in 1855 the parents of Lewis were both deceased. The father's occupation was given as barber. Their names are given as Peter Mitchell and Catherine Smith, but if Lewis did initially have a German name then perhaps his parents also had German names. I do not know. My German born Lewis may have been of German parentage, or mixed German/Scottish/ Irish, or both parents may have been British and in Germany when he was born. He married "according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Wesleyan Church in Scotland". This suggested to me a link with the German Evangelical Church.
If anyone out there is having similar difficulties trying to link up their Scottish family with German ancestors, I would be interested to hear from you. Or anything about German immigrants in Scotland, Glasgow in particular. Anything at all. It would be a bonus indeed to find anyone also connected to this Glasgow Mitchell family. Although I am interested in the family research of others as well as my own. I can't be the only person in Scotland struggling to find a German born ancester?!! :-)
Hoping to hear from you.
