- Excellent, thanks for that information Keith, I thought maybe encoders had become complicated and expensive.
Taking your suggestion, I searched for "encoder kits" and found a local supplier has these:
the datasheet sheet shows it comes with a fitting tool like you mentioned, plus different sized collets to suit the shaft size.
It's not optical, but capacitive, which means also no bearings or anything. What's interesting is that it allows you to chose from 16 different resolutions via a DIP switch, so I've ordered one of those and I'll see how hard it is to fit...

attach to things now to see how well they work, but I haven't had any
serious run-time with them yet to determine how I feel about them.

to rebuild and hack on (when I can finally "get a Round Tuit"... :- ). I'm especially
interested in controller and encoder changes, and would love to hear about any
controller interface and software issues that you find, as you apply those
encoders to Scorbot hardware. Good luck.
