      Oooh... I missed the v2 board when I looked to verify.  Yes, that looks pretty interesting.  You could stack a pair of those shields to control all of the motors.  And I like the bit of proto board they left on there.  That IS a tempting option.

      V2 of the shield uses I2C, with TB6612 MOSFET drivers rated for 1.2A per channel (3A peak).
