      Face it

Printed science fiction is not the leading or most popular or the
cutting edge of spec fic no more

      It is tv and films

The Godz of Sci fi are not writers like Heinlein, Asimov and Clarke
      were in the 60's--

They are not any writer you can name

They are George Lucas, Gene Roddenberry and Stephen Spielberg
None of whom was a sci fi writer or more than a casual fan.

So how do you compete against Star Wars?

How do you paint those settings without putting your readers to sleep?

For instance, All Lucas has to do is show the Death Star up there on
screen for a few seconds showing it relation to ships and planets to
achieve his effect. How do you do that?

Sure you can describe it in a sentence. But look at a still of it.
One picture worth a million words. The size, the colors, the
intricate model work. Does you sentence do that scene justice?
