Please make the usual "Lily Hike" adjustments to difficulty level (the first part of this hike, listed as moderate below is not technically difficult, but it is a very tough climb in the sun, and has been beyond the abilities of several hikers over the years). And not to be pedantic, but the animals involved in this path were mules.

       Hike Description

This is a Moderate to Strenuous hike, definitely NOT for first time hiker or beginners. This route along the Ngong Ping Skyrail is a peaceful and underused trail. It is purposed-built for the construction of the cable car service, where donkeys were used to transport the construction materials on steep narrow trails. So far the trail is well maintained but definitely no more encounters with donkeys! You will enjoy the aerial view of flights landing and takeoff at Chek Lap Kok Int'l Airport, fantastic hillscapes, Giant Buddha and various historical monasteries make this route a special one. The route begins at Yat Tung Estate, Tung Chung. An ascension on moderate slope with over thousands steps to the Buddha Statue (550m). One way hike, 7km ,can be done in 2-3 hrs depend on group’s pace and condition....we will take it easy, at your own pace all the way to the top, the leader will try to accommodate. The trail path is mainly concrete steps with minor part is dirt trail. We will take a break and lunch at Ngong Ping. Hikers can decide whether they would continue to Lantau Peak ( this part will be optional).

After lunch and energy  refill, will continue to the next level of challenge to the Lantau Peak, 2nd highest Peak in Hk ( 935 meters),the ascending will be tough to climb up the big stones steps to Plateau, then the descent from the peak back to Pak Kung Au. From there can take bus back to Tung Chung .This part is about 10K

Hike Difficulty- Strenuous ( The Donkey trail is moderate, plus the Lautau Peak will be Strenuous)

Total Distant – about 17 km

Gradient – Total ascent  about 1600 meters

Surface – Dirt trail, concrete path, wooden stairs, stone stairs

      Hiking Time- 6-7 hours

Hiking pace – Since a lot of ascending, will take slow to moderate pace.

Please, note, both the Donkey trail and Lantau Peak have no shade, 100% exposed. Weather forecasted to be Sunny, temp will be cooler, but could be warm and hot with a continuous ascending.

Thing to bring: 3-4 liters of water, (you can get replenishment at Ngong Ping market), sun block, hat, umbrella, energy snack, lunch, good hiking shoes, proper hiking gear, walking poles as needed.
