      ...For Saskbirds, 09 January 2006...

      Good Evening All,

There is one more species to add to the 2006 list after all.

Over lunch on the day of the Pike Lake CBC, Bob Girvan passed around
photographs of a single adult male *Summer Tanager*, taken on 17 May
2006 at a farm a mile from his place, just SE of Swanson (~20 mi south
      of Delisle).

Apparently, seated at the supper table, a red projectile suddenly
flashed passed the window, alerting the observers that a very strange
bird was definitely present. Luckily, it stayed around for twenty
minutes-- just long enough for Bob to run to the tractor to get the
camera. The photos (print, not digital) are a little dark, but clearly
show a bright rosy tanager with a thick, heavy bill.

Coincidentally, all of Saskatchewan's previous records for Summer
Tanager also occurred in May: Frontier 1976, Canora and Regina 1993
(Smith AR, "Atlas of Saskatchewan Birds", 1996.), and a final record for
Saskatchewan Landing PP for 24 May 2001. The closest source for this
      species is south-eastern Nebraska.

So, this unexpected addition puts the final 2006 list at 311 species,
with the SUTA fitting in between Yellow-breasted Chat and Scarlet Tanager.

      Best of Birding,
