In the Tibetan tradition, the Maitreya mantra is recited to bless
animals (pets). Is there something similar in the Theravadan
      tradiiton?

        Dear Ed miller,

The Protective Verses, PARITTA PALI, Collection of eleven protective suttas
are very good for chanting these can be used to protect not only animals but
also all beings. These 11 suttas are very powerful suttas for protection and
blessing as well. Most of the Burmese Theravadan Buddist monks chant them.

May you all be free from enmity and danger, be well and happy.

        nandasiddhi.
