Sounds like a thermostat to me. It's fairly easy to replace. Make sure you get the oring and the seal that goes to the tube behind the thermostat housing.
However our engine will almost never get much over 140 unless we run her over 2000 rpm. At 2200 - 2400 she will get up to around 165.
