Ponce Inlet Florida Pelagic Trip - 2 October 2005

On Sunday, 2 October 2005, the Ponce Inlet Marine Science Center, a Volusia
County Florida governmental non-profit organization, is sponsoring a
pelagic trip to the western edge of the Gulf Stream, off Ponce Inlet.

The trip is part of a 3-day "Migratory Bird Festival-- Wings on the
Wind", put on by the Marine Science Center, and held from September
30-October 2, 2005. Saturday will be a day of booths, lectures, and on
Friday and Sunday there will be a number of field trips.

The pelagic trip will be aboard the 'Sea Spirit', a 65' head boat based
out of Inlet Harbor Marina at Ponce Inlet, FL. The cost is $100 per
person, and there are spaces available for 35 people. The boat will
leave the dock at approximately 7am, and return at 5pm.

The area that will be visited, known locally as The Steeples, is a
productive location of underwater cliffs and seamounts that cause
upwellings and current edges, especially along the western edge of the
Gulf Stream. It is especially good for pelagic species during
      migration.

Possibilities include (* denotes high probability of sighting):

      Cory's Shearwater*
      Greater Shearwater
      Audubon's Shearwater*
      Manx Shearwater*
      Sooty Shearwater
      Wilson's Storm Petrel*
      Leach's Storm Petrel
      Band-rumped Storm Petrel
      White-tailed Tropicbird
      Brown Booby
      Masked Booby
      Red Phalarope*
      Red-necked Phalarope*
      Pomarine Jaeger*
      Parasitic Jaeger*
      Long-tailed Jaeger
      Sabine's Gull
      Black-legged Kittiwake
      Arctic Tern
      Bridled Tern*
      Sooty Tern*
      Brown Noddy

Leaders for the trip will include Bob Wallace and Wes Biggs, among
      others.

For more information, or to reserve a space on the boat, please contact
Science Center Director Michael Brothers at:

      or call 386-304-5545.

For those coming in from out of town, we also have two beachfront hotels
lined up that have partnered with us to give us group rates of $79/night for
      the Bird Festival. When
registering say you are with the Marine Science Center Migratory Bird
      Festival "Wings on the Wind."

      They are:

      The Bahame House
      2001 South Atlantic Avenue
      Daytona Beach Shores, FL
      800-571-2001

      Best Western, Aku Tiki Inn
      2225 South Atlantic Avenue
      Daytona Beach Shores, FL
      800-258-8454

This is a unique opportunity to witness fall pelagic migration in
Florida, at the height of the migratory season. Don't miss the chance
      to see something really rare!
