Nesting Least Terns & Other Observations
Here in Naples, for the second or third year in a row, Least Terns have
been nesting on the gravel roof of the Publix at the Crossroads Market
(corner of Vineyards Blvd. & Pine Ridge Road), This is about five miles
inland from the Gulf. Last evening, I witnessed many calling LETEs flying
above the Publix' roof carrying small fish in their bills as if courting.
Neat sight to see and almost totally unobserved by the various shoppers
coming out to the parking lot.
In addition, there were at least four Common Nighthawks "peenting" and
soaring well overhead at the same shopping center. There appeared to be
an eruption of Halloween Pennants (Odonata) flying about that was caused
by the afternoon thundershowers. The Common Nighthawks were taking
advantage of this phenomenon.
