I stopped by Yucca Penn WMA in south Punta Gorda yesterday afternoon for a half hour quick run. As promised there were Hairy Woodpeckers! I saw at least 4 individuals along with 3 Downy's, Red-bellieds, and a ton of Pine Warblers. One Brown-headed Nuthatch was there as well. Over the landfill there was a massive cloud of gulls and Vultures but I didn't have time to check them out on the way to work. There were also at least 5 Bald Eagles in different plumages interacting and calling at one another.
On a different note, that is slightly off-topic. I just purchased tickets to Alaska in June where I will do some birding, but I bring it up more because the round trip fares were $354.75!!!! each. I was not planning to go up but with that fare I had to bite. At any rate, if you've been holding off on such an endeavor, you may well want to consider going now. I will be happy to help anyone with logistics if interested. This fare is about $500 less than I've ever seen since moving down here.
Standard disclaimers apply, I don't own an airline or travel agency, etc. and don't stand to gain any $$ for this just spreading a word for a unique opportunity to bird areas one might not otherwise see.
