Catholic-Orthodox panel tackles historic rift over creed

      By DAVID YONKE

A new study by a joint Catholic-Orthodox panel has
reached agreement on a single Latin word, filioque,
that has played a major part in the centuries-old
rift between Eastern and Western Christianity.

Filioque, which means "and the son," was added by
Roman Catholics, without consulting their Orthodox
brethren, to the Nicene Creed, altering the Fourth
Century statement that says the Holy Spirit "proceeds
from the Father" to "proceeds from the Father and
      the Son."

Disputes over the addition have raged for well over
a thousand years and the issue has been debated by
such historical figures as Augustine, Tertullian, and
      Charlemagne.

It wasn't until last month, however, that the two
      sides reached an accord.

The Roman Catholics should drop filioque from the creed,
said the North American Orthodox-Catholic Theological
Consultation in a statement issued in Washington Oct. 25.

The recommendation, however, must be approved by the
Vatican, and although Pope John Paul II has indicated his
support for dropping the filioque, the panel's statement
is only a suggestion, said Archbishop Daniel Pilarczyk,
co-chairman of the panel and head of the Cincinnati Catholic
      Archdiocese.
