Monastery of Saint Ephrem at Marat Seydnayah
The following is an excerpt from the report on the visit of Abba Seraphim (British Orthodox Church) to Turkey and Syria.
the new Monastery of Saint Ephrem at Marat Seydnayah, flanked by the impressive range of the Anti-Lebanon hills just north of Damascus. Later that morning he joined the monks and seminarians for breakfast before being taken on a tour of the impressive facilities. A new lecture theatre, scheduled for completion in September, is presently under construction. The fine new Church of SS. Peter and Paul has been constructed over a new patriarchal burial vault and the remains of the late Patriarch Mor Ignatius Yacoub III will shortly be moved here from their temporarary burial place in the Patriarchal Cathedral in Damascus. The monastery and its churches are decorated with a number of fine Coptic ikons painted by the nuns of Saint Demyanas monastery. Of particular interest is the one showing Patriarch Mor Ignatius Zakka kneeling before the Saviour and offering the monastery at his feet.
