Re-Council of Europe debate on Turkey's treatment of minorities
- Dr.Thomas Joseph, your efforts are praise worthy. The Turkish President Mr.Abdulla Gul and wife arrived India yesterday for 6 day visit,he met Prime Minister and Ms.Sonia Gandhi. In a joint declaration on terrorism agreed at the talks between Dr Singh and President Gul, the two sides denounced those who sponsor, abet and instigate terrorism and provide them safe havens.and decided to explore the possibility to work together in identifying projects in IT, Telecommunication, Space Research, Bio and environmental -technology.The Jacobite Syrian Church of India should have called a press conference in Delhi during Mr.Gul's presence in Delhi and ask Turkey to treat minorities in Turkey fairly and to returm Mor Gabriel Monastry to Syriac Orthodox church of Antioch. The Bishops could have given appeal and convince Mr.Manmohan singh to take the matter in bilateral discussion and India should have officially asked Turkey to stop persecuting minorities, return Mor Gabriel Monastry and above all The Syriac minority should have the rights of the treaty of Lausanne, most importantly the right to teach in Aramaic no doubt. But unfortunately there is no capable leaders or bishops with such vision in Indian Church today.India the largest democracy in the world should not avoid the topic of Minority persecutionin Turkey. But our Indian ministers are not much aware of issues like Mor Gabriel Monastry, the Jacobite Syrian Church of India should educate them if it has the potentiel. From the desk of:-Bibu Philip Matthew;Vayaliparambil Pynadath
