Glimpses on the Holy Father's Apostolic visit - Part II
- "You see that you are accomplishing nothing.
Look, the world has gone after Him!" John 12:19
It is true that till 2002 the Jacobite Syrian Church had no written constitution but it survived twenty centuries purely based on the traditions, canons and teachings of the Apostles and Holy Fathers from the time of Christianity. Of late, the enemies of the Holy Church have been trying to squeeze the Body of the Christ from all possible quarters; as a result the need of a written constitution was felt. Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, Kanjikuzhy P.O., Kottayam and Mar Thoma Syrian Church of Malabar, Thiruvalla, Kerala, are also registered Societies under the Indian Societies Act. Both these Churches are availing many benefits from the Government of India in respect of receipts of Foreign Currency and exemptions of Income Tax, etc. under various sections of the Income Tax Act, 1961. Necessary Government Notifications are being issued from the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Finance, etc. from time to time for registration as well as renewal of such benefits. Unfortunately, when the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church, the oldest denomination in India, woke up and realized the need of a written constitution and registering a Society in the year 2002 (Puthencruz, Kerala), some people could not tolerate it and made hue and cry. I really pity on such people that they attempt in vain to declare that it is a new Church. There are many oldest families in Kerala and a few of them got registered as Trust recently for legal survival. Does it mean that those families are new?
Another important happening during the Patriarchal visit was the Holy Episcopal Synod held in Karingachira St. George's Cathedral on 23.9.04. The root of this Parish goes back to the early centuries of Christianity in India. This Holy Synod was also held under the chairmanship of the Holy Father in which 18 Metropolitans attended. This Synod has authorized the Holy Synod in India to create new dioceses and also consecrate Metropolitans in India.
His Holiness also attended the Church Managing Committee and Working Committee Meetings as well as Sunday school Association Central Committee Meeting on 24.9.04.
