Sad News For Syriac Lovers
Han J.W. Drijvers
Last sunday night professor Han J.W. Drijvers has died aged 68. He has held the chair of Semitic studies at the University of Groningen between 1986 and 1999 and has been at the forefront of Syriac studies for decades. His publications deal with ancient-Syriac literature in its earliest stages, with the history of the Near East with an accent on Hellenism and religious trends from that time and later, with epigraphy and archeology, especially with regard to the first centurioes of our era, and religious phenomenology in general. Many will remember him as a vibrant and dedicated scholar. He will be missed.
