Russians to build first Antarctic Orthodox church
MOSCOW, Feb 13 (Reuters) - Russians in a remote part of Siberia are selecting logs for a chapel which they will build, disassemble and then ship to Antarctica, the first Orthodox church on the barren continent.
A Russian Orthodox spokeswoman said on Wednesday the project was the first of its kind.
Interfax news agency said a priest named Father Georgy, a 20-year veteran polar explorer, would preside over the chapel, to be built from a specially selected variety of cedar in the mountainous Altai region of Siberia.
The site of the future chapel has already been consecrated, Interfax said.
