      Devotional thoughts for Hoodos Etho
      (Sunday- 9th November, 03)

Reading: Gospel According to St. John 10: 22-38

      Dear and Respected Brethren,

I believe that all of us know the literal meaning
of the term Hoodos Etho is Dedication. Holy
Church considers Koodos Etho and Hoodos Etho as
two important and joyous festivals in the church
calendar. Actually this festival was also copied
from the Jewish traditions and was re-modeled in
the Christian atmosphere with Christian meanings/
explanations. The original dedication dates back
to King Solomon the wise, who only erected the
first house for God. To meditate the prayer of
King Solomon prior to the dedication, kindly read
II Chronicles 6: 19-42. In fact we have to study
this prayer with much care and devotion, as such
a prayer is the need of the hour. Again we find
another dedication at the time of King Hezekiah.
      Kindly read 2 chronicles 29:1-30.

In the prescribed reading for the day, we find
the conversation between our Lord and the Jews.
They all had reached the Jerusalem temple to
participate in the celebrations of dedication.
The festival was re-started after the destruction
of the temple by the Greeks followed by the
renovation of the temple at the time of Jude Maccabee
in BC 165. The venue of the conversation (verse 23)
is the same as the one mentioned in Acts 3:11.Let us
listen to verses 26 and 27. But you believe not,
because you are not my sheep, as I said unto you.
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they
follow me Before going to details let us read verse
14 together with vs. 27. Our Lord tried to convince
that He is the Messiah whom they were waiting for.
But they could not understand. So our Lord is telling,
You are believing as you are not my sheep. We must
be cautious not to hear such a saying from our Lord
at any time. In our prayers we beseech
dont forsake us. Our Lord being our shepherd is
calling each and every one of us. But are we responding
like an obedient sheep. Are we not the sheep that
ran away from our Lord? Just think whether we could
confess Lord I have gone astray like the lost sheep.
We must correct our errors and come back to our good
shepherd with real and genuine repentance. Otherwise
we will have to listen Him He that is of God hear
Gods words: you therefore hear them not, because you
are not of God. (St. John 8:47) Kindly also read
      I John 4:6, I Corinthians 14:37, 2 Corinthians 10:7,
2 Thessalonians 1:8) If we listen to Lord Jesus,
we could hear him. Practice and dedication with
willingness are the necessary factors for the blessing
to hear the sound of our Lord.

See vs. 29. My father which gave them me as greater
than all and no man is able to pluck them out of
my Fathers hand. If we were in the place of our
Lord, we would have told this I have earned out of
my hard labor. Let us all pray for all blessings.

      May God bless us all.
