- Apostle Peter
Resurrected Lord gave Apostle Peter the commission to guide
and tend the sheep our Lord saved through His suffering and crucifixion. Peter denied Jesus but he confessed and cried
from his heart. He felt that he sinned. He did not stay in the state of guilt. When Judas betrayed Jesus, he felt
guilty. He went to the high priests who orchestrated
the betrayal. In the prodigal- son story our Lord narrates we
find the son realizing his fault. He did not stay there with the pigs. He turned
around and came back to the loving, eagerly waiting father.
Once Peter received the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, he
became a new creation; always ready to guide his master's church. Always ready to offer his life for the church.
The one verse that resonates in my heart is from his speech in the Temple by Solomon's Colonnade after
his encounter with the lame man. When Peter saw this, he said to them:
Fellow Israelites, why does this surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by
our own power or godliness we had made this man walk? The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant
Jesus Acts 3:12-13. Peter is telling that it is not his power
(sakthy) or godliness (bhakthy) that resulted in the healing of the lame
man. Peter is reversing the sin that
Moses sustained while offering water to the Israelites from the rock. Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock? But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, Because you did
not trust in me enough to honor me as holyin the sight of the Israelites, you will
not bring this community into the land I give them. Numbers 20: 10-12. This is how the Holy Spirit guided peter
guides the church to the Promised Land. Glory and adoration to the savior only;
exclusively; anything else is sinful idolatry.
