- Moses led the Israelites in to the promised land. Because of the rebellious nature due to the work of Satan in the hearts of the people, they were bitten by fiery snakes and they died. Moses did intercede and God asked Moses to make a snake out of brass and hoist it in their midst. “And Moses made a serpent of bronze, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of bronze, he lived” (num21:9).
God was giving His people an insight in to how humanity would be saved through our Lord and savior. “Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:14-16)
Salvation is exclusively for believers. Whoever believe that Jesus is The only begotten son of God the Father and that He accepted all our sins (burden) in to Himself and crushed it on the cross is saved. In Romans 3 and 4 apostle Paul explains it. It was not the works or merits of Abraham but Abraham’s faith contrary to his knowledge that him and his wife were physically dead to bring forth a child got rewarded.
It is interesting to know what the Israelites did with the bronze serpent. They forgot that the serpent was only a tool. They worshiped it for another 450 years. Though the Egyptian slavery was only for 430 years, the new slavery of the serpent was for more time. Even King David and the temple builder Solomon were under it. They failed to know that it was obedience of God’s commandment to look at the serpent was saving them. They failed to understand that it was Almighty God who saved them and not Moses or the man made serpent. King Hezekiah was the one who would stand for God. “And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father did. He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan” (2 Kings 18:3-4). “Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven”(john 6:32).
They failed to know the mighty hands of God because they did not had the builder of the church; The Holy Spirit.
