It was on January 26th 1981, the foundation stone of the Church was laid by Mor Gregorios Geevargheese Perumpallil, the then Diocesean Metropolitan. The foundation stone was blessed by H.B. Catholicos Baselios Paulose II on 18th January 1981, the day being the 25th death anniversary of former Diocesean Metropolitan Mor Dionysius Michael. A temporary chapel was consecrated here on 25th March 1981 (the day of Vachanippu Perunnal) by His Beatitude the Catholicos of the East Aboon Mor Baselios Paulose II, assisted by Metropolitans Mor Gregorios Geevarghese Perumpallil, Mor Kurillos Kuriakose of Niranam and Thomas Mor Theophilos of Outside Kerala. Under the dynamic leadership and guidance of Mor Gregorios (Perumpilly Thirumeni) the construction work of the two storied Cathedral complex was finished in the next few years. On final completion of the structure, the Church was shifted to the upper floor and the ground floor was converted as the parish hall named after Mor Dionysius Michael Metropolitan. The church built here later was reconstructed and renovated in 2005.
This Cathedral at Kottayam is the only church of the Malankara Syrian Orthodox Christians established in the name of St. Joseph, and was a long cherished dream of Jacobite believers in Kottayam Town, who though majority in Kottayam Diocese were forced to come out of the two major churches in the town, Kottayam Cheriapally and Mor Elia Church-constructed on the property of Malankara Syrian Church besides KK Road. The St Joseph Cathedral and Kottayam St Ignatius Simhasan Church are the two major centres for the Malankara Syrian Orthodox Christians now in Kottayam Town. The new Kottayam Diocesean Centre now getting constructed at Kanjikkuzhy would be the third but largest centre (including Church, Diocesean office and other centres/offices in around 3 Acres) of Jacobite Syrian Orthodox faithful in Kottayam town.
