      THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There were many things that proclaimed that they were a family, around 500 student volunteers and programme officers of National Service Scheme, who had at the assembled Government Women’s College auditorium here on Saturday for the NSS award ceremony. The institutions and individuals with outstanding NSS activities in Kerala for 2009-2010 were honoured by Education Minister MA Baby.The air of camaraderie that hung in the air, the jubilant faces and the slogans shouted at the top of their lungs for each other told loud and clear that these awards were of a different kind where everyone is winning together.

      Zacharia Mathew, son of Very Rev T C Mathew Cor Episcopa has been selected for the best programme officer award selected for the 2009- 2010 award instituted by the National Service Scheme (NSS) for the institution with outstanding NSS activities in Kerala. Zacharia Mathew is working at V H S School, Vellimon, Kollam. Zacharia Mathew works as the Joint Secretary, JSCYA, Kollam Diocese ,Treasurer Thekkan Mekhala Manjanikkara Padayathra Sanghom and one off the council members of Kollam Diocese.

      The award committee comprised the Principal Secretary, Higher Education as chairman and the Director of Collegiate Education, Executive Director, Information Kerala Mission, member-secretary, Higher Education Council, Head, NSS regional centre and coordinator, Training and Orientation Centre.

      Anitha Sankar, the only woman, even at the national level, to adorn the post of NSS state liaison officer, welcomed the audience. She Sankar said that the gathering represented a cross-section of the state since there were NSS members from all five universities and other educational institutions. V Sivankutty MLA, spoke on the occasion.
