Prof. P. I. John hails from Karapuzha, Kottayam. He had his early school education at the Karapuzha Governement School and the C. M. S. High School, Kottayam. Later he went to the University Intermediate College, Trivandrum, where he did his Pre Degree. He studied at the S. B. College, Changanacherry for B. Sc and at the U. C. College, Alwaye for M. Sc. He taught at the Mar Athanasius College at Kothamangalam for two years after which he took his Ph. D degree from Aligarh University.
P. I. John established a modern experimental plasma physics programme at PRL in 1972, which developed into the Institute for Plasma Research. In 1997, he set up the Facilitation Centre for Industrial Plasma Technologies, where a variety of plasma based technologies were developed and transferred to industries. He was a consultant to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna and the United Nations University, Tokyo. In 2002-03, he served as the Head, Physics Section, IAEA, Vienna.
He has taken a lead role in developing the National Fusion Programme and establishing the administrative framework for funding universities and educational institutions in research in fusion science and technology. He participated in ITER negotiations and helped set up ITER-India. This is the nodal agency for co-coordinating the Indian participation in the seven-nation programme to set up the World's first thermonuclear fusion reactor at Cadarache in France. He is also a member of the ITER STAC and the ITER Council.
He stays in Sterling City, Bopal. He is married to Minnu (Nellikal, Kottayam)and has two children. The elder son, Joseph is a Global Product Manager for Roche Diagnostics in Zurich, Switzerland and his second son Thomas is a post-doctoral research worker at the Scripps Research Institute in San Diego, USA.
